Hey gang,
Could use some advice on our situation.
Team - Rooster Juice Racing and we campaign a 1979 924 at 24 Hours of Lemons events. At our last event we had problems shifting our snailshell tranny (surprise!) and limped it to the end of the race. We figured it was toasted, but when we examined it - we had completely shredded the bushing in the shift coupler - so we replaced that and its shifting much better, but we can't seem to get it into 1st gear - its always grinding or popping out almost feels like we can't get enough shifter throw to engage it.

We removed the tranny since we had a spare we were going to swap in. Spare turned out to be from a 931, so the input shaft is different - so we're sunk there. Since we had it out, we took off the 1st segment of the case to see if the gear was visibly damaged / broken.

Problem is we don't see anything that looks that horrible - we took them both apart to do an internals comparison. Reverse engages fine and feels like it has more throw - but we could see that we had bent a shift fork or anything.
Any chance we could have something shifter related out of alignment?
We noticed that the 2 trans seemed to have slightly different alignment of the 1st gear shift fork as it relates to the position on the rod.

Advice? I'll see if I can fidure out how to get some pics up..
Cheers. Mike

The second image - I'm trying to show that the shift forks (924 vs 931 tranny) seem to have slightly different positions relative to the end of the rod.
There seem to be roll pins to hold it in place, but could we have effectively moved first gear out of alignment?[/img]
