well. your a noobie for sure, but we starte this way, one way or another,
look on the side of the tire. for example. mine are 215x45x17
the 217 is the wideth
the 45 is the height
the 17 is the size (of rim).
look here:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=46
oops. i had it backwards

???
215 is the tire's section width
45 is the tire's section height, and also referred to as the tire's series, profile or aspect ratio.

Your best option: Tell him to put on the same size as you have now.
Just to clarify the numbering..., you'll see a set a 3 numbers on your sidewall, a two-digit number and a letter, and a bunch of other stuff.
The first set will be like you said xxx/yy/zz where xxx is essentially the width of the tire (section width), yy is the aspect ratio (the relationship between the sidewall height and the aformentioned width as a percent), and zz is the diameter of the wheel on which the tire can be mounted.
Sooooo, 225/50/15 means 225mm tread width, the sidewall is 50% of the width, or about 125mm, and it can be mounted on a 15 inch wheel. Don't ask me why they mixed metric and english..., I have no idea.
You might also see a "93W" or "89V" or something like that. That's the load and speed rating.
In reality, each tire varies a little from the numbering. Some 225s are wider than other 225s. Check the "specs" section at tire rack for details on a certain tire.

+1
Also remember you can make it easier on yourself to convert to inches. Divide the section width by 25.4. You can multiply that number by the side wall percentage, double it and add the rim height to get total tire height in inches. |
