Very cool - have fun!
Along those lines... Chris Marsh and I will be at Mid-Ohio this weekend (towing down Friday) with the #55 and 77, ready to rock it to the ITB field in an SCCA Double Regional. Merritt won't be there, she's got another thing going on... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Ok, it was an interesting weekend.
Supertrapp pulled out of the tailpipe 4 times. Hammered back on harder each time, but still came off.
Corded the RA1's, I really don't like the mishie pilot sport cups but that's what I had.
Snap spun the car at 4 again, just like last year. Tried to restart to back away from the track. Saw spectators getting really excited and yelling something about fire. Smoke was roiling out of the wheel wells and from under the front. Saw the corner worker throw a red flag so I thought it was probably time to go. Grabbed the fire bottle and exited stage left. Ran for the guard rail, but looked back to see what was up and saw nothing. Figured with the red out I could go take a look. Wandered back, still didn't see anything, popped the hood pins and gingerly lifted the hook about 1/2 inch and still didn't see anything. So, no problem. Signaled to the corner worker for a tow in. About that time the rescue, fire, ambulance, tow, track oil dry and just about every piece of equipment they had showed up. My first comments NOT ON FIRE. THE CAR IS NOT ON FIRE...!!
So we hooked up and they pulled me back to the pits. Turned out the little hose that hooks to the temp fitting on the back of the head (hey. that same fitting blew off last year) got pinched and got a hole. It was spraying coolant about the size of 1/2 a pencil... down the bell housing... out the bottom and back onto, where you say???, yep, my right rear tire.
grr
Autozone gave me a free piece of 1/2 heater hose that fixed it.
The fire came from the fact that the carbies were dumping raw fuel into the hot exhaust when I stalled and according to the spectators I talked to, the car shot a sweet 4-foot flame out the back when I was cranking trying to restart.
kewl. I hear there are pics but I haven't seen them yet.
After getting all that sorted out, I was sick of the supertrapp coming loose so I drilled a hole and put a screw in it. Which promptly broke the pipe off the other end, up at the flange that bolts to the header collector and that was it for the weekend. On the trailer and home I went.
Ahhh, what fun. |

Wheee!!
Good to hear you and car survived in good order, despite the spectators' expectations!
Sounds like you need more supports for your exhaust, to keep it from moving around and putting all that stress on the pipes...
Which track did you run? I've run one, the one with the lightbulb... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Yeah, I've been wondering about the supports too. Haven't had a problem for 20 years, rebuild the motor and suddenly crap breaks all over the place. I'm not sure if its moving too much, or not enough. Or maybe its just an old pipe that let go... I'm going to start by going from 2.0 to to 2.25, or maybe 2.5 all the way from the collector and working on the carbie linkage to smooth things out. That should solve it.
Yep, drove Thunderbolt the one with the bulb, aka the octopus, aka the jersey devil. I call it a royal pain in the a**. Makes my right shoulder hurt holding the wheel going through a 270 degree turn like that but nothing a horse-dose of naproxin can't cure. Running right about 1:40. But I'm not anywhere near where I should be, power-wise. It seems like a lot but I think mid 1:35-ish times s/b about right by the time I get done... |

ditch the supertrapp and get a real muffler, you might find some of the power you need
Still, sounds like you had a great time! Good job! _________________ Stefan

Actually, I think I ran the Lightning course, the shorter with the Lightbub onto the front straight - not the Octopod.
FWIW, we're running 2.5" exhausts on our racecars, with mostly straight pipes and Dynomax race bullet mufflers. Rather loud, but fun and fast. _________________ Vaughan Scott
