OK - it's probably been asked and answered here before, but I'm too lazy to search for the thread where it's buried...
What is the biggest size R-comp tire that will fit on 15x6 phone dials with stock suspension settings (without rubbing on the springs/fenders, etc.) on a 1987 924S?
I think the answer is 225/50R15, but I wanted to verify before buying.
225/45R15 would give me more room, but can you really fit them on a 6-inch rim?
I'm torn between the Kuhmo V710 and Nitto NT-01.
Thanks,

I agree, 225 on 6J! Even 205 on 6J is wobbly |

205/50's were factory on 6" wide rims a lot of cars in the eighties and they worked pretty well.
225's are too wide for 6"
6.5" wide rims would work, but 7" wide rims would be better.
Tire Rack's website has rim width specifications listed for the tire/size you're looking at. Those are based on what the manufacturer and their own testing finds. _________________ Stefan

The factory optional wheel setup was 6s in the front and 7s in the rear.
Only 6s are factory authorized for front and rear with winter tires.
7" phone dials are available everywhere, and relative cheap. the factory setup for 7" in the rear is 215s, not 225s. |

Hopefully to give you a point of reference, the '87 924S that we picked up a couple of months ago was autocrossed extensively. The tire/wheel combo for autocross is 7" phone dials with 225/50x15 Toyo R888's. The front fenders are gently rolled at the top.
The car is equipped with coilover's on the front with 350# springs and has 30mm torsion bars in the back. Sways are 25.5mm front and 18mm rear and it has Koni Sports all around.
The car is lowered and with the BFG street tires (205/55x16 front and 225/50x16 rear) has a ride height...measured at the jack points (inside of the jack point hole to the flat part of the frame)...is 6 3/4" front and 7" rear. Obviously it will be lower with the Toyo's!
Hope this helps. _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

7 inch phone dials are one of the most common used porsche wheels you can find today because they came on most of the later model 944s. I have a set of 6inch and a set of 7 inch in the 52mm offset 15 inch rims.
A 215 on a 7 inch rim is about standard, I would hate to try running a 225 on a 6 inch rim. If you are set on 225s I would definately acquire 7 inch rims. If you are going to put money into more rims because you dont like what you have, I would suggest going to 16 inch rims. There are many reasons for doing this. First you are more likely to find 7, 8 and 9" rims in the 16s. Second, low aspect ratio 16 inch tires are more common. You will have an easier time finding what you want for the price you want. Third, with more rim and less sidewall you are going to have a better cornering car.
Phone dials in 16" with 52 mm offset sold in a set with 8" rear and 7" front are not too hard to find. I think they came on both the 944 turbo and the 928. I see them on ebay at least on a monthly basis.

Thanks for all the replies... I actually have a set of 16x7 and 16x8 rims from a 928. They are chrome "dinner plates" and look really blingy...
I don't mind them too much, but they are really heavy compared to the phone dials. _________________ 1987 Porsche 924S - track toy
