|
|
Hi All, i,m working on a carrera gt for a friend, the car has been sat in a garage for the pass 15 years and he,s picked it up for a bargin price of £8k (they,re fetching £20k over here at the moment) i,m getting the car ready for the road again and there,s a problem with the belt tensioner bolt, the o.e tensioner is wider than the new one that porsche have supplied and the bolt is now to long , does anyone know the part number i need as the porsche dealer over here doesn,t know, i would say i need a bolt of 55mm, the bolt that came out is about 70mm.
any help would great,
many thanks

Hi Rik, not sure what you've got with that GT, but the tensioning roller bolt, and for that matter, the tensioner, are identical for 924/931/GT. As the belt is identical, so too are tensioners and associated hardware.
FWIW the bolt is indeed M10 x 55 Part # N 010 455 3 or go to your local bolt supplier and get a suitably graded one.
Seems like something odd about the setup on the GT. As you have 931s check the differences/or similarities. Was the GT set up for some sort of wider drive belt or have you a GTS? _________________ 80/81 932/8 ROW |

There were two versions of the tensioner: 056 109 243 D thru 1979; 026 109 243 F from 1980 onward. I always thought they were different between NA and 931 because my 1981 NA had the longer bolt when I got it and my 931s had the shorter bolt; but according to PET, such is not the case. The version using the shorter bolt was introduced in 1980 as an improved design or something, and is correct for both NA and 931 applications. The tensioners themselves are interchangeable with respect to the belt, as long as you have the correct length bolt. I believe the earlier style can be tensioned with an open end wrench, while the later uses the funky two-pin belt tensioning tool. Since the parts are interchangeable, somebody somewhere along the line must have gotten ahold of the earlier style when ordering and installed it on your car. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Thanks guys for the help, it does look like the car has had an old style tensioner put on, there are afew things on the car that have been played with, some better than others, but the cars in pretty good shape, just needs bring back to life after a 15 year rest...
cheers

You're quite right Dan, about there being another type of tensioner available. I've never seen the other type, but I'm not altogether sure it's just an early version.
What I mean is.....in talking to a mate in the south of our country who is also a Toofah fanatic, I mentioned, amongst other things, the early tensioner. He advised he replaced a tensioner around 2 years ago and the new tensioner (from the Melbourne OPC) had a large nut affair seemingly welded onto the front of what we know as the 'normal' tensioner, necessitating the use of a longer bolt. The belt spacing was still the same width, but the tensioner was considerably thicker due to the extra nut arrangement. He also advised that he had to relieve the water pump housing by several mm to accomadate this weird tensioner.

Watch it (dont over tension belt thinking the belt whine sounds
like a supercharger). Doing so adds a lot of stress, Ive had one come aprt on me before 'now' cant say thats my cause for tension failure.
This new looking one i talked bout earlier from e-bay curled my toes
looked beefier & wider 4 some reason. Probly not though. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

if you have never done the belt on a 924T, I would seek out experienced owners/mechanics to aid in the changing of the belt
the CGT is an interference engine and costly to repair if you bend a valve.
the pistons are NLA through Porsche. _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net
