Don't do it if you can't afford to LOSE THE CAR.

Wow, think I'll keep the 3 shells I have that are virtually rust free. Have a 'spare' barn with a dry loft, easy to haul them in there and forget about them.

Two comments (I didn't really want to say this over on pelican, but we're among friends here):

1) Every time you get in the car at the track and you turn that key, you accept the fact that you could end up like that or worse. Don't kid yourself, it is dangerous to drive a car fast and inexperienced drivers make mistakes. When you make them when you're going fast, things get bad quickly.

2) Over my many years of DE's and racing, sometime during the weekend, it seems like THERE'S ALWAYS ONE PERSON who rounds off the edges of their car. Always. Well, almost always.

I was at a club race last year and I counted 12 cars written off. 12. And this happened with supposedly "experienced" drivers at the wheel (who should know better than to try to drive at 11/10ths, but that's another story).

So don't think it can't happen. Because it does. In my experience, at least once a weekend.

More fine examples of going where your eyes are looking and not paying attention to the forces being exerted on the cars.

Don't want to write it off? Rent someone's race car and have some fun.

Strange, we had a 24-hour race here in Portland over Halloween. The field was a large mix of driver's of all ages and skill levels. Many were first time competitors on a race track. All of the cars were worth $500.

Only two of the cars were completely written off, and there maybe 5 or 6 real incidents like the ones above.

Why? Well, the driver's were told before the race that any overly stupid and aggressive moves would get them talked to and then bounced from the race. This is the same policy all of the track days I've been to have followed. The links posted show a bunch of Yabo's driving way past their limits and paying the price for it.
