After actually getting the bleeders on the front open and getting all the air out of the lines the brakes are still spongy and the car is hard to stop. Could it be the power brake booster? or the master cylinder? how do I test the booster?

How old are your brake hoses (10 year expiration date)?

The rear drum brakes need to be adjusted on a regular basis, when were your's done last?

+1 on rear drum brakes. They aren't like new brakes which auto adjust. I had a similar problem and I think the drums weren't adjusted correctly.

I think it might be the lines as far as I know they are the originals from 1976. The car is not stoping at all until I get to the last 1/8 of the distance of travel.

You have air in the master cylinder,The master cyinder will need a good bleeding before you bleed the lines again.
