All depends on what you'll be welding, and how much you want to spend.
I've a mig/flux (solid wire w/gas, or flux core without gas) that can do sheet or larger - steel, stainless steel, aluminum by changing the wire and gas (and settings). It was the most versatile, and relatively inexpensive..

I want a wire feed welder to weld aluminum and light guage steel.
I can just get a mig wire feed welder. Im thinking of a 110 mig welder.
not a harbor freight 199.99 bagger either no. What ever
I get the mig is bestr for all around autobody use. So
Im asking is a mig the best bet.

Buy yourself a good quality 180 amp mig you couldn't beat it with a big stick for versatility. If you find that you want to do sexy work in stainless then you have to get a t.i.g. For this an inverter stick welder can be used with the right kit and argon gas.

Do yourself a favor. Buy a good quality welder if you want to weld aluminum. If you want to weld Alum. with a mig you will need a 240V welder with high amps. I have a Hobart 135 120volt one and it will not weld Alum. You need high amps because alum. is a very good condutor and I don't have enough. I have never used a Tig welder but they are better for welding alum. . A mig is much easier to weld with though. I can weld just about anything up to 1/4 inch steel with mine. So do a lot of research before you buy. Ask a local welding shop and tell them what you want to do with it.

Buy a Miller brand mig. They can do both steel and Aluminum if you get the right model. I can tell you right now it is expensive. You need to have 2 kinds of gas to weld both. You need blueshield (argon and Co2 mix) and then you need pure argon for aluminum.

Don't buy a welder where they try to "push" the aluminum wire through the lead like steel. It is too soft and will jam all the time at the feed mech.

Any good aluminum Mig has the handle that is direct feed at the nozzle end.

I have never seen a flux core mig that welds nice yet. That is not how a Mig was designed. It was meant for an inert gas such as argon to help cool and shield the weld and keep the temperature lower to help make a stronger weld and it actually welds at a much cooler temperature. You want this for doi9ng body work.

Thats my 2 cents....had a miller for over 10 years and only had to put wire in it. Never a break down!

If your mostly welding thin gauge metals, just get yourself a oxy-acetylene torch. Makes beautiful welds in steel and aluminum (with the correct flux and procedure). They don't call the torch the poor man's tig for nothing.

thinking of building a turbo kit this summer. Have been looking at bassgts work and like what he has done alot.

+1 on the Miller MIG. I've used Miller and Linde in the past and bought my own Miller. I also had a small 110 volt MIG that barely worked. The Millers have a nice aluminum feed attachment that works very well. Don't bother with the tall gas cylinder unless you are doing a lot of production welding on a daily basis. Get the little 3 foot cylinder with argon/CO2 and another argon only if you are doing aluminum.

agree with all this. Miller is great but expensive. For welding Ali expensive is going to be the best but perhaps not the only way.Ali welding is not as hard as many people thing but it does take the right set up and lots of practise. I once saw a guy brought in to run some welds into the body of a Honda NSX and leant a lot from him, the best welder I have ever seen and he made ali welding look easy.

Selecting a welder for ali you dont have to rule out a smaller compact unit it just depends on what you want to do. It is possible to do smaller stuff with a 115v unit anything from 22 to 12 gauge will be fine and you could probably go up to 1/8" or slightly higher with a little preheating but you need to be careful when doing this that you dont heat too much, I cant give you a max temp to heat to because I am not sure of it, but you should be able to look it up if you need to. For anything thicker than this you will need a 230V unit, again with preheating you should be able to go right up to around 1/4" with a 230V unit. You only really need a 200 amp output if you are going to be doing lots of ali welding on a regular basis, smaller units should be ok for occasional ali work. You also need to decide between continuous or tapped voltage control. Continuous gives you more adjustability and finer controll but is going to be more expensive, Tapped should be fine if you are looking to keep the price down and some guys find having less controll easier anyway, tapped should be fine for most things.

here are a few of my tips to help you start. Ali wire is softer than standard steel wire, therefor it is more difficult to feed, be careful and take note here, while welding, keep the gun cable as straight as possible to minimize restrictions on the wire, a bend in the gun cable can make the ali wire kink. Also throw out all you know about steel wire diameters and machine settings and re learn them for aluminum as they will be totally different. Finallly practise practise and practise.

Hope this helps

be careful with mig and going high amps....i did just that, didnt do my homework and found out that its lowest current setting still blew holes in thin sheet

Lincoln has some pretty good deals going at the moment - though they just upped their prices March 1. In particular, most products will come with a rebate you can credit towards a helmet or other related stuff.

I just picked up a Squarewave 175 TIG from them; rebate is going for a cart worth over $200...
