OK, here's something I've been thinking about for a while. I love the stock 924 rims. I'm not into bigger rims on older cars, small and light is fine with me.

Has anyone ever tried a Super Beetle rear disc conversion kit on a 924? www.socalautoparts.com sells a kit for the Super Beetle to convert the rear drums to disc which is blank, so it could be drilled to take 4x108 rims. The kit does both side and is a whopping $174.95 for all new parts, cheap as chips. Trailing arms on the 924 are the same (similar?) as the Super Beetle? Any reason this wouldn't work?

If it were as cheap as that I'd do it.

There is a slightly more expensive kit with an ebrake. Seems to just contain 2 cables in addition to what is pictured above. Perhaps a meachanical over-ride for the pistons.

might be a bit of a pain drilling your rotors every time you need a new set.

i have seen a few 944 parts cars for not much more than that. of course the parts wouldn't be new but you would have a five lug setup.

the VW units e-brake is just a cable attatched to a mechanical override on the pistons....not really ideal..but i guess it works

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Today's weirdness is tomorrow's reason why.

Its just so much more hassle though. I have to get the car, strip the parts I want, do something with the rest. Then, I'm still buying new rotors, hoses, caliper rebuild kits, pads etc, etc. Then I have to buy new rims when I already have nice NOS 4 bolt rims.

I agree with Min, drilling rotors everytime you need new rears would be a hassle, but honestly, that's not something I'll be doing every year, not even close.

I may just try this experiment over the winter. Unless someone can definitely tell me I'm barking up the wrong tree?

Both my tyres sets (summer & winter) are carried by stock 924 rims.
In two several colours but both stand excelling good on the Toofah of course.

Is there a possibility to, or could someone, contact a (Super) Beetle driver for comparisons?
Or would SocalAutoParts be willing to provide the answer as a proven fact in pictures and a How-To?!

To keep the car road legal I/we do need the E-brake/handbrake.

I appreciate your initiative very much, Chrenan: Lets take this bull by the horns and get rid of the rear drumbreaks without the 5-lug hassle.

Regards, Harm.

Then all you need to worry about is brake bias. I guess that's the advantage of the 5-lug -- it's been taken care of already.
