|
|
My 924S is about totally stripped down to bare metal and is ready for roll cage installation. It will be going to the local race car cage builder in a few days. He does mostly larger track cars, and has only done a few Porsches in the past.
Any advice on the cage design?
Any pics of a really good cage design?
Thanks,
BC

Six pix starting here, courtesy of Peter Utzon:
Also, you can't go wrong copying the GTR cages:
...or Steve Bassington's new setup:

Yes, go to the sills, not the floor!!! Also note the rear braces in those examples - no rear braces to the wheel wells!!! There's no structure up on the wheel arches. I've seen plenty of less-talented fabricators go there. Check out my page too, under "Construction" - there's a few old shots of the cage in there, before we did the cross-bracing and NASCAR bars. But I like the rear bracing on Bassington's cage better. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Might as well show off Todd's handiwork on my cage...mine is only a six-point setup, but I'm very happy with the final outcome. 21 pix starting here:
FWIW, my setup was based on an Auto-Power bolt-in roll bar with their "u-weld-it" cage. I opted not to go with the hoop because I won't be tracking competitively. As a result, we didn't use all of the pieces from the u-weld-it kit, and modified how the door bars are configured. Also, we put significant thought and effort into the reinforcing pads on the rails as well as the rear floor pads, which you can see earlier in the album. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

For what series is the car? SCCA's General Competition Rules have diagrams of what is required plus restrictions on attachement points to the chassis. The first pic of the car with the orange door frames isn't legal in SCCA. You can and should design a cage that will add to the re-saleability of the car should you choose to move on.

Thanks for the photos! Keep 'em coming...
Yes - I am thinking 944Cup or 944Spec in the future, so I know it will need to be SCCA legal - I think the specs that PCA-NA uses for their club races are the same as SCCA or NASA. I have printed out both specs, but the cage builder has requested some photos, as well as written specs.
I definitely want the "NASCAR" style door bars on both sides, as this will still be a DE car for a while until I get my license.

Scott - welcome to the board!
I'd want more arm room than shown in that Spec car, but definitely the right attachment points etc! We started with X bars in mine, evenually moved out to wide NASCAR style bars. Sorry, no recent pics to show... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Blase,
PM me and I'll show you 5 years worth of cage evolution in our 944 Spec cars. The door bars must go out into the door. The feet must go to the sills and longitudinals. It must fit TIGHT against the A and B pillars and still have 360 degree welds, etc.
I'll pull pics and transfer them to photobucket, then post here later.........too tired now. Frickin 944 clutch! _________________ Current project 1981 931

How much would a cage like that cost? _________________ 1977 924 |

I'm happy to pay my cage builder between $2000 and $2500 for a well built cage. _________________ Current project 1981 931
