So weird thing today, car is turning over but not starting, any suggestions?

Key turns, RPMs rise then drop dead to 0.

It catches after a couple times. Weird though, sometimes it depends on the key position, seems shotty. My car has had a few hard starts this winter, so I am sure the Starter has taken a beating.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Also, may need to end up buying new starter and key ignition by my guess.
O btw, while dirving a couple times it would just stall right out

Ok, so everything goes good, but found issue, if key in is the wrong position it doesn't keep running.

If while turning, and while it dies out, if the key goes into the right spot at the last second it keeps running.

Anybody have a similar issue, and if so, any idea if I can just have the ignition tumbler replaced, reset by a locksmith, or if the whole steering column needs to come out to replace it.

Yeah, sounds like the switch, no you don't have to rip out the steering column. You should be able to replace just the switch portion. I'm sure there are some posts around here on that with some diligent searching...I'd link, but I don't know of any off hand...

Just replaced the switch a couple of months ago. Good news.. the switch was 4 bucks. Time to change it, about 2 hours once i knew what to do. There are some excellent postings with pics here on this topic.

Try the search function above. A Search for all terms on the words plastic sleeve steering ignition switch brings up 5 topics. One or more of those should be relevant.

Here's my adventure with replacing the ignition switch:

http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=25537

Here is the walkthrough at Clarks Garage discussed in the above thread:

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-25.htm

The walkthrough is for an 87 924, and while not exactly the same procedure on the early cars, it gives a general idea of what is needed.

Agree its the ignition switch at fault. Just the white electrical part behind the lock barrel, cheap VW part.

Unfortunately it CANT be replaced from behind, under the dash, although some posts, including mine, suggest it may be possible. Necessary to remove wheel, blinker assy, cast ally bearing and switch mount, to access retaining screw for switch. Bummer.

Possibility this may be related to your headlight motor problem too. Details in that thread.

If it starts while cranking but dies when switch to the on position, it could also be a bad resistor between the 15 post on the coil and the ignition switch. May want to check that before replacing things.

if your buyin' a resistor for yer 924 turbo, 1982 or i'm sure it applys to alot here, it's just a typical 12v resistor, call porsche or something they'll try to charge you out the bum for it. I got mine from a local parts store (after goin' there in person 'cause the lady on the phone insisted i give model and everything and when i did it came out to some crazy price) long story short just ask for a 12v resistor, cost me liek 12 bucks =)
