Do we have a known explanation for this claim here on the board? Photo displayed with text below is of the AS-902 Style Air Oil Separator on our 931's.

From the Automobile Atlanta catalog:

924 Turbo Oil Separator

Tring to find out why your 924 Turbo still smokes even after replacing the turbo? It’s the inexpensive plastic filter! Replace it with this new updated one
and solve your problem!

924 Turbo ............G931 107 221 01 ..........$109.24 Turbo Seal Ring
line.

AA doesn't have a good reputation 'round here. I'm not sure I would take their claim at face value.

However, it is indeed an interesting question, although I suspect smoking turbos have more to do with too much blowby or bad seals at the turbo than a less-than-optimally-functioning air-oil separator.

I still want to know if regular plumbing grade PVC is safe to use with motor oil. Autospeed had an article that showed step by step how to fab up your own air-oil separator out of alu. The plans were simple enough that it could easily be constructed out of PVC, I'm just not 100% certain that PVC is impervious to motor oil.

Is there something inside the stock separator? I thought it was basically empty.

Mine was empty. The top has a cylindrical wall that projects down into the the lower half container. I cleaned the seating surfaces on the container and lid portion, and used clear silicon as adhesive to put them together (I would have used epoxy but thought I might want to get back in there.)

I am aware of the mixed reviews on Automobile Atlanta, however since they do a lot parts for 924's, and have in the past, am certainly curious about this particular assertion. Wondering what type of failure they might be alluding to with this unit, since it is empty from the factory. Perhaps the top pops like mine did, and the system is no longer closed (causing improper vacumm, pressure or porting to atmosphere.)

BTW, one of the reasons for short turbo life on 924's is the fact that all of the oil pressure goes to turbocharger. In fact, there's absolutely no need for this, full oil pressure to the turbo hurts spooling and increases stress on the seals.
What I did with the stock oil feed that I welded shut the short metallic adapter that goes into turbo mount and drilled 2.2mm hole instead.

That reduces problems with oil return also on older 931-s that doesn't have updated oil drain.

That be a PCNA part number. . .by "updated," Dr. George is referring to a ho-hum factory parts supercession (while trying to sell it for more than the dealer).

He used to call himself "Dr. 914."

Interesting Coke on the desk.
