I have a 944 with the Black Vinyl seats that have the cloth/mesh centers. The vinyl looks great, but the cloth/mesh is faded to a purple color. Is there any way to restore this?

Rit dye is supposed to be good for restoring the color to a faded cargo area carpet. I don't remember where, but I did read that somewhere. It didn't say how to do it though. I don't think anyone would expect you to put that into a washing machine... I'd imagine it would have to be sprayed on - maybe ok for the cargo carpet, but I'm pretty sure dye applied that way on seats would come off on your clothes. Maybe spray on, let it dye in, then give the seats a couple of good shampoo-ings. -Or spray on, let it dye in, let it dry, spray with Scotch Guard, let that dry, then a couple of shampoos.

You'll need to be careful with this stuff. Like smoothie said, it will come off on your clothes. Usually dyes won't stick to our carpets and fabrics because they're a synthetic material, as opposed to a natural fiber like cotton, which can absorb the dye. Check the label closely before using. I used some on the little piece of carpet by the gear shift and it worked okay but didn't last long. I tried it on the back hatch carpet and had less than stunning results. Check w/a detail company in your area. They usually have some trick for dyeing carpets. Good luck!

What about regular old spray paint. Enamel, not laquer - laquer has hotter solvents and might melt your vinyl, the padding underneath or even the fabric if it's synthetic. Just a thought - haven't tried it. Test it on some junk fabric first and give it a few days in case there's a delayed reaction. If it works, mask the piping (seams)(assuming they're made of vinyl)and mask the other vinyl areas real good, spray, then maybe brush after spraying. -Or try a vinyl paint, spray then brush it into the fabric?

Take the seats to a upholsterer and have them sew in new panels. Shop for the best price and take the shells off the car. Saves time you are paying for. Other than that buy new seats or used ones.
