yeah sorry I should have been more specific. The shift lever mechanism is rattling. I'm assuming there is some type of linkage that has loosened up and wondering if there is a simple means of tightening it up? _________________ '79 Porsche 924

Well you can easily get the shift lever out to see what's going on. Is there extra free play in the movement along with the rattle?? _________________ Whoever said you can't buy happiness forgot about Porsche!

yeah... a lot of free play... I can stem the noise by moving the shifter around while it remains in gear.. A hell of a lot splashier than I think it should be. So I need to take it apart? Any tips on getting the knob off? hahahahahahhahahaha _________________ '79 Porsche 924

The stock knob is held in by a spring clip at the base of it. If you can remove the clip without firing it across the garage you get 10 extra points.
If you have *alot* of free play it could be something back at the other end of linkage though. That's not quite as easy to get at... I had an 80c bolt come loose a while back causing massive amounts of free play - still ended up a relatively easy fix... _________________ Whoever said you can't buy happiness forgot about Porsche!

JACK RABBITO is your 79 the snailshell type trans...reverse is where 1st gear is normaly if it is the problem is probly your shiftr bushings at the back under the the tunnel and above the trans. a pita to get at!you want to repair that soon as it will cause problems in the trans.eventually.the 80 style trans is totally different.theres an article at the top in a sticky and do a search about changing snailshell bushings.i did mine without removeing the trans.that is a PITA if it is the bushings pull the trans to do it alot easier _________________ Doco "where am i going and why am i in this handbasket"author unknown

I just replaced my shift linkage bushings 3 months ago. my job was especially painful because i shearded off the conical bolt that holds the shift rod to the transmission.
If that bolt doesnt sheer off its still a big job but definetly worth it.
When your in there also replace the guide rod ball socket thingy. lol. I cant remember the correct term for it but the guide rod has a ball socket on the end of it that pushes onto a ball that it welded on to the torque tube. Mine was completely worn out.
There is an alternative to the guide rod ball socket. Some board members modify and use a heim joint. Search that to see what im talking about.
If you do not fix this now and continue driving it, you will wear out your syncros, the PO of my car did this and now my 2nd syncro is getting bad.
Once I fixed mine my tranny doesnt grind as much(still have to be careful) and when a gear is selected it feels very notchy to get it into gear. It feels a lot more positive. also the slop in the shifter is now about half of what it used to be.
The job takes awhile but is soooooo worth it. You'll enjoy driving your car a lot more afterwards.
o ya, i replaced my conical bolt with one that uses a hex or allen key instead of a six point bolt. Now the bolt can never be sheared by a wrench. _________________ '80 924 M471,Wideband O2, Full coilover susp,23/19 sways,Bilstiens,KLA Strut Brace,Roll Bar,Test Pipe,BBS RS, Willwood BBK

yeah i've got the snailshell dogleg whatever the hell you call it '79 Sebring... and it seems I've got what you're all talking about... I don't exactly understand how this could happen to a car that sat in a garage half its life and has less than 60k on it.
everyone is saying how huge of a PITA this is... as I'm no master mechanic, is this something I should have professionally done or is it just more annoying than it is technically difficult? _________________ '79 Porsche 924

my car has 85000 miles on it and my bushings eventually discintegrated. I couldnt even shift into 2nd, had to limp the car home. The milage doesnt matter. The bushings are made of plastic and get brittle when they age. When I fixed mine there wasnt a bushing there anymore
Its not a technical job, but it is time consuming. Do you have the haynes manual. I followed that book of lies and the precedure in there is pretty good.
You have to drop the exhaust, take off the half shafts at the transmission and leave them attached to the wheels (I wrapped the half shafts in big zip lock bags and taped them shut so no dirt could get in the bearings), take out the conical bolt (you will need a new one of these, one time use), disconnect the shift linkage from the tranny, and the tranny from the torque tube, slide the tranny out of the way, I took the shift coupler out to put in the bushings, and reassemble.
This isnt step by step just what I recall from the weekend long procedure.
It took me over 30hrs because my conical bolt was sheared off and i couldnt seperate the shift linkage from the transmission. Eventually I cut the shift linkage and got a used one.
It shouldnt take this long it the conical bolt isnt sheared.
I say try it out and get your hands dirty. And get a manual of some kind. And when you are stuck ask questions here. You will save $$$ and learn how to fix your car. When its all done it is very satisfying _________________ '80 924 M471,Wideband O2, Full coilover susp,23/19 sways,Bilstiens,KLA Strut Brace,Roll Bar,Test Pipe,BBS RS, Willwood BBK
