There once was a young member here who insulted his 924, and insisted the 944 was a better, more reliable car (its newer afterall, and has a real Porsche engine). So, he bought a 944 and lived happily ever after.
Until today:

I must be getting soft in my old age, I actually feel bad for him. At least he is finally considering getting a regular, reliable daily drive (used Toyota echo). _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Yeah it's hard to see someone going through that...
I agree though - it's good that he's considering a reliable economical car. The Echo is perfect.
Who says everyone can afford a Porsche? Many parts for the 924 are cheap but these are old cars and there's always something needing attention.
I'm living on the edge with mine, as is, and I have second car to back me up...
I just spent $350 on bearings and brakes. Dreading the hours to do the work. _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |

um yeah I was not very lucky.
I was going up a hill when I just heard screeching and no more moving lol.
anyways porsche shop first thought it was clutch now they tell me torque tube stripped with coupler to transmission.
funny thing is the car moves now. I think the mechanic tightened up the coupler but they told me it's toast and 4 grand in repairs (brand new torque tube plus 12 hours labour).
now the car is on my house and jackstands and I'm deciding whether to try and drop the transmission myself and buy a used torque tube / coupler for cheap. It's going to take me months to do this as I'm working and going to school everyday. |

I'm going to also go see a porsche 924 today lol, running driving according to the guy for 500 bucks.
if it's actually in driving condition I'll buy it to drive around until I get my 944 fixed or part it out or whatever.
I'm thinking of parting out my 944 or getting help to get it fixed eventually.
the 924 i'm looking at is a 79 5speed but the guy says it has not cat and hasn't aircared it. |

if I decide to part out my 944 I'll let you guys know if you want anything.
the engine etc are in excellent conditon , new water pump timing belt, oil seals etc.
I just spend over a 1000 bucks in parts on it in the summer, new tires on fuchs, good seats / interior etc.
I spent 4100 on my 944 and in the past 2 years I've spend probably around 4-5 k in parts and done most of the work myself. |

Wow, it took him 98 minutes to find and reply.
Good job, C!

P.S. I actually predicted this car's demise some time ago, but now can't find the post! _________________ Toofah King Bad

But I didn't say his name?
Anyway, bad luck timstar. I wouldn't get a 924 in your situation, get an echo for cheap to get you around. Collect good used parts for your 944 to make the repair and do it when you have time. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

They're as reliable as the maintenance done to them, very often cheap parts, but they're 25 years old at least.
1996 Hyundai Accent bearings and hub $250/wheel
1980 Porsche rear wheel bearings $50/wheel
I've noticed with me and cars, if I don't do the regular maintenance then things pile up and get to be too much. So I try to have cash always available for maintenance things - try - and an emergency buffer of cash. The trouble with a cheap Porsche is that very often maintenance has been neglected, that's why they're sold for cheap, and the new owner inherits someone else's problem. Only after a few months of driving do people realize the extent of the To Do list. _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |

Yeah, if it's timstar doing the taking care of.
C, man, you're giving the wrong advice...you know he won't take that advice.
Timstar, dude, by ALL means. Go buy a 924 for $500. In fact, while you're at it, drop Scorpio and 924er a line and ask them to help you develop an electric supercharger...it'll only cost you another $10, and it'll add, like, a gazillion HP. Oh yeah, and get a turbo simulator from eBay, and then one of those gasline ionizers, and for good measure throw on a cold air intake, I've heard the K&N open cone filters add 2 gazillion HP. Things you DON'T need to consider are new plugs, wires, caps, vac lines, coolant hoses, brakes, clutch, coolant, fuel filter, oil filter, tires, injectors, cleaning the grounds, draining and cleaning the gas tank, and about a million other things I think of in my current sardonic state of mind. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Psbtttsss.................I nearly choked Ideola. If this guy had a no speed bike he would mess it up.
It not so bad but multiple postings within minutes is too much.
I think he drinks too much coffee or worse. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Actually, come to think of it, it is probably best that Timstar doesn't buy another 924. I'm not sure where he will go for advice given his opinion of 924Board members. This is what he posted on Rennlist in response to a post I made explaining why he was so negative about the 924.
| Yummybud924 (on Rennlist) also know as timstar924 and timstar92404 (on 924Board) wrote: | okay buddy. If by aggrevating you mean I had never worked on a vehicle before then sure. I can talk shit about some people on the 924.org board also but I won't because I don't care.
The truth is some people on 924.org who i won't name are a bunch of girly men that got their feelings hurt when I said the 944 was a better car and wanted to get rid of my 924.
they also spread a lot of misinformation like I was told the 944 is so much more compicated and expensive to work on etc and their timing belts have magical powers that requires a phd to work on etc. I have done a lot of work on my 944 since then and it is not a hard car to work on at all especially with all the support like the workshop manuals on clarksgarage.
honestly rennlist members / clarks-garage have been much more helpful and I have been able to keep my 944 running without problems for 2 years and many repairs. |

How could you possibly feel sorry for an IDIOT who constantly bombards the site with questions asking for advice, which he ignores, spouts some lame excuse?
Boardmembers told him not to buy the 924 that he bought. When he stated that he had problems, and asked for advice, we tried to tell him what to do, which he promptly ignored. His final solution to the problems that he mostly caused on the 924 his self was to buy a 944.
We all told him not to buy a 944, but he bought an example that some of us told him was a mistake. A few weeks later, he starts complaining about problems with the 944. We all asked him to go to Rennlist with his 944, and things have been fairly pleasant since he went over there (for the most part).
And now he wants to come back because his 944 has problems that he can't afford to fix?
I SINCERELY HOPE NOT.
Timstar, BUY A CHEVY, A FORD, A HONDA, OR A TOYOTA, anything but another 924 or 944. |

I didn't realize this was Timstar. But it must suck to face repeated disappointments and be dismayed as to why they happen. _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |
