|
|
Just a reminder to all - the 4M Industries/Munk's Motors/PUB Racing team will be going to Road Atlanta on the 5th of November for the American Road Race of Champions Presented by Grassroots Motorsports Magazine (ARRC)! Practice is on the 6th, qualfiying on the 7th, and race on the 8th. No, I'm not aware of any plans to televise the race, though it will be covered by Grassroots, the race title sponsor!
We expect to do very well this year, based on our results at Mid-Ohio in the IT-Spectacular this August; at very least, we should be able to put the car on the podium, if not an overall win!
We will only be attending with the #77 car this year; while Chris Marsh has done very well at home with the #55 car, it still lacks one of the most important assets for Road Atlanta - a motor! Road Atlanta is a very large, fast track, and he'll be even worse off there with his car than at Mid-Ohio. However, he is plannign to come, and we are hoping to put him in the car for a practice session, to start to get him familiar with the track. Hopefully next year he will be running the race too!
We're going through the overhaul/refreshing of the car right now; it's getting new CV's (one was worn out, and the others were old) and wheel bearing repacking/replacement, and we just inspected the engine bearings - good news, they're in great shape, so they're going back in with just a fresh gasket.
So if you happen to be in the area and feel like checking out some great racing, come on down! Our race will be at 8AM sharp Saturday morning. _________________ Vaughan Scott

If you happen to find out what issue of GRM the event will be covered in I'd love to know, it will go on the garage wall as inspiration! _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Quick status update on prep of the car...
Ended up putting in all new CV's (had 'em on the shelf waiting) when we found one on the car was finally worn out... good time to put in new rear wheel bearings too (considering this is a high-speed track we're going to!)... have still to repack the front wheel bearings and install new front pads and rotors.
Finished checking the engine bearings today, reassembling, reinstall oil pan, and fill up with 8 qts of very expensive Redline 15W50 synthetic race oil - all the better to keep 'er happy at high speed and revs! - also known as the $100 oil change! (it's 8 qts because of the added volume of the accusump and oil cooler)
Loud pipe (for the big tracks) is installed, engine's running, front end's all back together... all that remains is to do those front brakes, check alignment and corner-balance, then we're ready for a road trip!
Oh, yeah, and the car's getting a thorough polish and wax! _________________ Vaughan Scott

Quick update from practice Thurs... leading the ITB timesheets it seems... but not all players are out yet... still... not bad for 3-yr old tires...
Expect this morning's Q1 session will be the key; rain is expected this afternoon, which will be a good practice, but no help for lap times!
Will post back... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Today's results, 2nd in Q1, slid to 3rd in Q2, but OK with that... a local guy got his car working better in the PM Q2 session to jump in front to the pole, but since the race is at 8AM, same as Q1 session - we're expecting we should be in good shape... currently raining, overnight, cleaning the track, so it'll be fresh in the AM.
But we should have good consistency working for us, and have a plan to pick up a little more speed... never raced the P1 guy before, but can play with him (did in Q2)... and have beated the P2 guy plenty times before (all 3 races at Mid-O in Aug), so... we have good hopes for the race... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Results are official... we took 3rd... would've been better, but the car was substantially damaged with an impact on lap 3 or so... ran as high as 2nd, but were passed for 2nd on the last lap and couldn't quite hang one for a re-pass due to the crash damage...
Still, not bad... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Here's the first/only video I've had time to post so far... the big one, the crash that changed my day...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylBvNdsHksc
I estimate the Volvo hit me going about 65mph (based on my data), vs. my 20-25mph... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Vaughan,
I don't know, but from what I saw in the video, I would say the Volvo should have gone a 13/13 out of that incident. It looked like to me that he went into the corner to hot and use you for auxiliary braking. Was he a reject NASCAR driver?

LOL! No, this isn't Porsche Club, guys... this is SCCA. We don't do 13/13's.
Actually, he saved my car from nailing the wall very hard. Watch it again - I've lost control re-entering track (the only thing I can think of is mud on the rear tires) and am looping over to tag the RH wall, when he hits me. As for him hitting me - it was pretty much unavoidable, once I got sideways - he had no-where to go, really. At best, it was a 50/50 chance of missing me on a snap decision, and I challenge anyone to make a better call than he did. He's a VERY experienced, capable driver, with a long racing history. We were both bummed about the contact, shook hands and shared regret after the race. I got lucky - he came in on a flatbed.
We run the car to stock redline, 6500, and I use an MSDS header (4-2-1) with 2.5" pipes and two (at that track - 3 at home) Dynomax bullet race mufflers. The car's also gutted. We do need to do some dyno tuning, though. Maybe over the off-season.
Here's another video - this is the whole race highlights, from the start:

I should have some pics uploaded to link soon, and will proceed with the writeup before long... _________________ Vaughan Scott
