So while cruising ebay I found a temp control mechanism from an '87 924. From the picture it looks about the same as mine (a little improved design) but I was hoping someone could tell me whether or not it will work/fit with my '79 924. _________________ '79 Porsche 924

No. That`s the later type and is all plastic. Not as reliable as the early metal arm ones, like you have.
Can be modified to fit but is a PITA and involves rewiring the fan switch.
IMO best to keep looking for one same as yours in good condition, easy swap. |

I believe you also have to replace the valve under the hood because the arm pushes in the opposite direction than your original.
Put up a "wanted" in the parts section. There are quite a few owners of parts cars that have these sitting around.
Ebay is a good place too, as you've already found out. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

hey just came across this same unit on ebay and I gave it another look and I'm certain the arms are metal and the body unit is plastic. Everyone sure it isn't a fit? _________________ '79 Porsche 924

No. Of course what RC and DHook said above still applies. The resistance for fan control isn't built into a slider, it's in a seperate rotary switch that you'd also have to buy in addition to a new face plate and slider end "knobs". 2 of the sliders are half width, as compared to the earlier control that has all 3 full width sliders. -And the heater control in the engine compartment would also have to be changed to the later type due to the difference in travel width of the sliders. -And the cables may/may-not/probably-not come off the back of the control aimed in the right direction - then you're looking at getting and customizing cables to work around that. In other words it'd be a big expensive pain in the A. Just be gentle with the one you have until a correct one for your model year comes up for sale.
I wasn't recalling the slider levers were made of metal, but apparently they are. -Still flimsier than the earlier design...it's the areas of the plastic part that hold the ends of the cable coverings that breaks. I've had to repair 2 of mine. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
