The original Bosch fuel pump has metal rollers and makes a lot of noise as it ages. Mine started making noise one time after running out of gas (and gas acts as the pump's lubricant).

The company that makes new fuel pumps for our car (p-something. can't remember the name?) has quieter pumps than the original bosch.

When I first Bought my 924 the fuel pump made a hell of a humming noise and my car wasn't even running. after replacing the rear fuel pump my car was running sweet!
It cost $380 AUD for a new Bosch pump

I suggest that you get a new one before it total packs in!

Benski,

I think it's the Pierburg pump which is quieter than the bosch ones. It uses Nylon rollers, which also last longer.

I think levans knows what hes talking about here.
I have seen noisey fuel pumps that sound like they are running but are actully just wearing the internals out....

It would be a good idea to replace it....

I have aslo found that the bosch pump if in good condition will not make a loud noise..

If you are going to replace the fuel pump why not flush the tank and get rid of all the rust that has been accummulating. I told you all that I removed a 1/2 cup of rust out of mine.

Restoring a 650 Triumph motorcycle and drained the gas out of the tank. Took out a lot of rust from a small tank. The only filters were in the carbs. Clogged lines, jets, etc and we couldn't start the bike.

You are at the tank drain it with fresh gas and run it through a couple of times.

No smoking and disconnect the battery first.

one small problem. I live in a flat (UK has pokey properties compared to America). The only real repairs I can do, are 1 day ones that are minor, becuase I can only do em on the driveway.
The fuel pump/tank stuff will involve booking the car into Schrmbri's and paying more than I have . I will have to risk it with the fuel pump until my overtime has made me rich (lots of OT this month, and next YAY!). I need to win the lottery to buy a house with a nice double garage, so I can quit and work on my car all day

If you're talking about the external pump, before you go and buy a new one check the pump mounts.

Mine used to make a lot of noise and then I finally got motivated enough to crawl underneath and have a look in preparation for replacing it. The rubber mounts were totally stuffed and the pump was buzzing away against the metal. Couple of dollars for new mounts and no more noise.

If money is an object and the mounts are good, hit the wreckers and ask about Mercedes pumps, same thing just cheaper. It's in the 924.org tech section

Hey Itgland
I'm no mechanic but i replaced my external fuel pump in about 1/2 hour, it just one big nut and 2 electrical connections. It turned out to be the fuel pump relay that was my problem so i may even have the pump somewhere, seriously its dead easy.
