I have been offered a 1982 Porsche 924 for free from my father in-law. He is the origonal owner and the car has been sitting for around 8-10 years. I have read some interesting article on here about what to do in order to get her running healthy again. She has around 95K miles, He was the origonal owner and it has always been stored in doors and never driven in the winter. It would probably cost me about $600 dollars to ship it to my location. The question is what am I getting into? I currently drive a 2003 G35 Coupe, The plan would be to revive the 924 over the coming months (I have allot of mechanical back ground (3 motor swaps) and studied EE in college. I fell in love with Porsche the first time I drove my father in-law 2007 Carrera S conv. Handled like a dream and with its 400HP well its was a match mate in heaven. I know the 924 is no 911 and lacks power but is a fun car to drive.

That looks really clean, I'd do it.

The biggest, nastiest, stinkiest can of worms you could ever imagine.

No, seriously though, sounds like a dream to any of the '24 loyalists on here, a (possibly) mint condition, unmolested example of a car many of us have grown to love and respect.

Sure, it will never compare to an engineering marvel such as the 911, but it still holds it's own by being the outcast, the black sheep of the family, if you will.

How many have you seen roaming the roads? I can count on one hand how many I've seen around here, definitely a rare breed. The rareness of it strengthens the bond.

With a little work, and determination, another prime example of a 924 could be complementing the roads with pride. Dare to be different, to go against the grain and keep people guessing.

Joejax, Thanks for your response I enjoyed it! I love the fact that I have not seen a 924 on the road in quite sometime actually its been years. I don't think it will take much to get her going again. He did tell me they had it running a couple years ago but it had a rough idle. I'm headed back in a week to take a look, possible drop the tank drain the gas and get her running at least to get her on a transport headed this way!

Wow, beautiful car, worth it for sure! Lucky!

Will take work, time and money for sure, but not being a turbo won't be too bad, and if you've already swapped a few motors, you should be able to handle it...

You would be best to disabuse yourself of this kind of thinking right now.

Hey, if you're right, great, you've uncovered a great find. But these cars don't like sitting, even for a couple of months...things can and do go wrong with them just sitting around, especially in the fuel system. I say go for it...hope for the best but be prepared for the worst!

Well I finally just got the car delivered! I drove her about 3 miles home and parked it. I started "the list" not too bad probably about 1100 in parts and material to get her back to prestine condition. I had all the body work done before shipping it ($400). I have ordered all the engine seals, timing belt and water pump. I have already done the ignition wires, plugs rotor etc. Once I complete the timing belt I will feel more comfortable driving her around do see what else needs to be done. I have all the brake rebuild kits ordered and will be redoing them as soon as I complete the timing belt and engine seals (which I still need to research). I will keep everyone updated but its going to be a slow process as I have my second child due in less then 8 weeks. I look forward to sharing my progress and learing from the experienced members on this site.
Thanks again for all your feedback, and I can offically say 924Board.org has a new officail member!!

BOLD is complete

Driver side mirror support (mirror good connection to the door bracket broke?) quick fix
Tires 205/60/15 (this week!)
Front brake pads, and caliper kit
Rear brake drum kit
Timing belt
Oil seals 4 motor (purchased by not installed yet)
Water pump
Paint timing belt cover (take to work blast and paint)
Middle/inside sun visor brackets
Leather boot on gear shifter
Center console bracket
Seat covers
Wiper blades
License plate brackets (take to work blast and paint)
Shocks (eventually)
All belts
Fuel filter/carbon canister
Passenger window not working
Slight oil pan leak (crank seal)
wheel bearings (if needed) all 4 ins and outs

This is a starting point. Once I get the font engine tore down and see if I need to rod the radiator, I can posibily chemically clean this at work. Same as we chemically clean our intercoolers and aftercoolers.

looks a good deal, just be prepaired for brake/cooling and a whole other silly niggles for the first six months or so as it has been stood so long. a bit of use usually means you find problems, but stick with it, get them sorted slowly one at a time and you will have a car that could last you a lifetime if you wanted it to. and it wont cost you an arm and a leg.

ps. why do so many american 924's have the reflectors on the side? can you remove them is it required by law?

Yes, required by federal law, although enforcement is a matter of local concern. Some states have very rigorous annual safety and emissions checks, other states have none. In Michigan, we have no emissions testing or safety checks, so you can pretty much get away with whatever you want without too much concern. Other states aren't so lenient.

OK so I did the timing belt, tensioner pully, water pump, fuel filter and all new belts. I changed the coolant, oil and filter. I also changed the transmission oil! All in all it was easy! I had to re-adjust some of the belt tension after startup but everything sounds great now! The fuel pump sure is noisy! Hopefully this isn't a sign?? Plz let me know if the wine is normal! I still need to rebuild the brake calipers and install new pads. Its almost time to get her on the road legally and find out whats next.

Drive the car. And when you're done, drive it again. Your to-do list is too long - the car will tell you what it needs.

The 924 is a great driving car - neutral handling, never slow down for corners, etc (are there corners in TX?) - and the 924 is not hard to maintain. Ideola said these cars don't like to sit - very true words. Mine wants to be driven - when I put it on the road in the spring, I promise to take better care of it and I keep some of my promises - but it always wants to run. Driving a 924 is a great experience and that makes any work worthwhile. ..... So enjoy the car - Peter

PS - welcome to this forum - it's the best auto forum I've seen - you can get prompt help from all over the planet.

Good evening,

Just wanted to update everyone as I finally got some quality time with my 924. I updated the list on everything that has been completed multiple items were added as I replaced the sun roof seal (both) and installed the aluminum brackets. I tore into the fuel system replacing the inline fuel pump and deleting the in tank pump with the 944 strainer (works great). I rebuilt all the brakes, soaked the injectors and cleaned everything including the WUR on the fuel delivery system. Well....... She starts right up! Runs very good and is going for a state inspection this week.

I do have some questions and concerns about my valves? They seem to be loud too me and I could really use some second opinions.. If anyone in interested in commenting I can send you an email of a video I took. I would really appreciate your feedback. Please PM or post your email address as I would really appreciate your comments.

Right now I'm planning on having her on the road by next week! Months in the making finally close to drivable!

The valve followers are not hydraulic, they must be adjusted on a regular schedule.
