I have read a number of threads on 924S/ early 944 gas leeks. I too suffer from some fumes when filled to high. PCA says that a cracted fuel expansion tank is a comon cause but I have not been able to find any listing for a new one. I have also read of comon cracks at the top of the tanks and that patches can be welded over them but haven't heard if they hold up over the long hall. I have read stock replacement tanks cost $3,000.
I also hear later modle 944 plastick tanks don't fit with out major recontruntion.
what about racing fule cells? This makes sence in solving the problem and making the car safer all the way around. I am working toward building my car into a pro solo street car.
What is invuolved in puting one in. cost? good one to get and from where? _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

You got a couple thousand dollars laying around???
They only cost in the neighborhood of $500, but you'll easily spend the difference on the install and plumbing.
And then there's the problem of trying to approach the level of safety of the stock tank.
I also would be reluctant to attempt a fuel cell install in a car with no cage!!
Fitment would suck; fuel cells are big rectangular boxes, our gas tank is very form-fitted to the car, and so a cell would be a mess sticking up in the trunk or well down on capacity to the stock tank - 5-8gal sucks on the street.
I don't run a cell, only the stock tank, and feel safer that way. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Been working with a fab shop local here in SE Michigan about building a fuel cell for my 924.
Took him a removed tank to design around. Base ball park estimate to conform to the FIA standards was around $3-4000. Could be cheaper if more than a one off was fabricated. When the 24 is back on the road will meet with him again. Not pushing the project as it not in the budget till 2009/2010.
Did contact the usual fuel cell guys and none available for the 924s.
On another blogg did find a race 944 for sale that had a custom fuel cell sort of in the stock location. Contacted the seller and he paid about the above.
Without a fuel cell most of the vintage/historic groups won't let you race. |

They let you run stock tanks in your class?
I ran into a guy from Canida at last years Porsche Clash who was racing a 87 924 S with the 944's. He had a fuel cell under the cargo floor but he did say it was a big pain getting it fitted. I would have thought there would be a big demand with all of the 944 racing that is going on latly.
Come to think of it I have seen a # of track prep cars runing fule cells in there cargo area. I have a freind that racings a 911 with that type of set up. as small tanks I only usly put in around 7 gallons a week. I don't run far it keeps from having problems when I am driving agressivly.
So what are most guies doing about their tanks? do the early 924's have this stress craking on the top of the tank problem or is that somthing exclusive to the 944 engine set up. And where do you find a replacement expansion tank if indeed it is cracked.
I have seen after market 911 replacement tanks for $500 any one know of where to find an after market tank for the early 944 and 924S? _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

Yes; fuel cells are allowed, but not required. I have never heard of any issues with expansion tanks, don't think I have one though... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I think it is called somthing by a diferent name on the earlyer modles. what about problems with cracked and leaky gas tanks on the early modles. Just wondering if I can swop out an earler tank.
those 8 gal. cells about 21 x 13 x 9 don't look too bad would still leave some cargo room. leak isn't bad enouph yet to be a big problem as long as I don't fill it all the way. Just want to know what my options are. Thanks for the link. I am thinking about going with the fiberglass hatch with the smaller window. I could put the filler spout right up to the top dead center like some of the american classic race cars do with the cell mouted in the trunk. _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit
