My wife and I received an incredibly convincing one back in January. It was a letter from the "International Lottery Convention" or some such organization. It said that we had been selected in a random drawing, and had one a cash prize of something like several hundred thousand dollars. The letter included what appeared to be a bonafide check in the amount of $5400 or something like that. It was apparently drawn on an account at Fifth Third bank. Had the correct address and everything. The check was even watermarked. The deal was, you had to deposit the check and contact the "lottery agent", some person in Canada, in order to get instructions for collecting the balance of the money.

We were very suspicious, but man, the fake check had us really wondering if it was genuine. I'm usually extremely skeptical about stuff like this, so we did some digging around, and of course, it was a scam of some sort. But man, these people are getting clever. I could not believe how authentic the fake check looked. It had routing number, account number, account holder name & address (apparently bogus), and a bonafide address to a Fifth Third branch location in Mason OH. Unreal.
