has any body put a gm 3800 supercharged v6 into one of these cars
i got my engine pulled out right now and im looking at my options
its either rebuild the stock leaning tower of power or an engine swap
i could do the v8 swap but that seems like it would be a bit heavy
ive seen the 3800 supercharged on dune buggys and they hall ass
those v6s are power houses and seeing how the car ways about as much as a dune buggy
i figure it would make my porsche scoot
what do you guys think _________________ The Ginger

If the SC is on top between the heads, I think you'll have clearance issues. Unless you intend to cut a big hole in the hood, in which case I will have a friend in the area come by and give you a "talking to."

Clearance issues are easy to fix, just slam the bonnet a few times... _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

the supercharger is on top but it is pretty low profile
they fit under the hood of stock gm cars
and if it does have clearance problems ill fix it _________________ The Ginger

Among the hundreds of logistic problems you will have bolting it up, 3.8 Buick's have a very strange balance\vibration problem that can be very difficult to isolate. I've known of a couple converted Triumphs that the owners gave up on. Not saying it can't be overcome but you should be aware of it.
I'd just pull the SC and bolt it on the stock engine. But I may be a little biased

I don't see that it would be that much af a problem. Look at these:

No, the important bits of the Renegade 944 kit are clutch assembly, bellhousing and engine cradle, and none are compatible with your NA as it now sits. . .they were designed around the 2.5, aluminum x-member, and Audi-mated driveline. _________________ Toofah King Bad

....and they are made to bolt up to a CHEV bell housing. Buick has always been and odd ball in that department.
Get in contact with Bob..he has the turbo charged grand national in his 924. At one time he had an extra swap kit for sale...might still have it. _________________ 1976 924

Bob just made an adapter plate for his Buick bellhousing. You can see it in his gallery here:
http://www.porschehybrids.com/gallery/Swap-pictures
The Buick 3800 supercharged also uses a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the earlier engines. I'm pretty sure that it is the same as all of the front wheel drive GM cars so you can use a bellhousing from an S10 blazer with a v6 or a Camaro with a 2.8L v6. The front wheel drive cars do not have a separate bellhousing, it is part of the transmission. |

Chev used the same bell housing from the S10...right through the v6, v8 and big block. So if the gm 3800 is the same bell housing you could use most any chev bell. One from a 92 chev truck is the best...comes with hydrualic slave that is down out of the way of the porsche cross memeber. _________________ 1976 924

Actually that is not correct. The 2.8L 60 deg v6 cars used a bellhousing that bolts to the front wheel drive pattern. The S-10 had one starter bulge and the Camaro had one on each side. All buick v6's had either the front wheel drive bellhousing or the BOP type. The BOP type shares the dowel pins and lower bolts with the regular Chevy but the front wheel drive one does not.
As far as I know, all 3800 v6's have the front wheel drive bellhousing pattern. |

me and my buddy looked at a camaro that had a 3800 in it but it was an automatic but imagine that the car would have been avalable with a manual so if i find that bell housing ill make that work but the real question is what clutch would i have to use _________________ The Ginger

I think the 3800sc swap is a great ideal, but I wanted to correct everyone on their information. the 3800sc is not a buick,it is as much different from the buick 3.8 as it is alike. The 3800sc is a gm corporate engine, does not have the bop nor chevy bolt pattern.it has the corporate "660" patteren.the "660" is what the engineers call the 60 degree,6 bolt patteren. |
