looks like I might have to change the alternator on my '79 NA. How much work is involved? The Haynes is very unhelpful and only mentions removing the voltage regulator and they expect you to pull the oil filter to do that.
Can the job be done from the top or is it a crawling around in the mud thing? |

Peter,
It's pretty easy. First, disconnect the battery and undo the alternator wiring. Second, undo the long bolt & nut at the top of the alternator (the one you loosen and retighten when you change the alternator belt). Pull the long bolt out and take the belt off. There should be a similar bolt&nut at the bottom, too - undo these and pull the bolt out.
That's all there is to it ... it's an easy job.
