As a heat barrier to keep engines and driving compartments cool 1" wrap 50 ft -$24.95
use the locking stainless steel ties to keep it on
these ties have a melting point of 2,500.f
8 of them -$13.95 You just wrap the header I guess...

Yeah, you just wrap the header... and watch it rot away. The wrap retains water and causes premature header rot. Don't do it on any street car, or any racecar that'll see the rain. Get the header ceramic coated instead. That's what I did..

ive had header wrap on my car for about 6 months now. I'm sure it does screw up the header, but without the wrap the header made everything so fricken hot. get ceramic coated, but if you are retarted and got an uncoated header like me header wrap is the way to go, id rather #### up my header than my alternator, starter, ignition wires etc.....

Jamez I believe that there are places you can send your uncoated header to get it coated, I don't know any specifically but maybe someone else on the board knows.

I'm sure there probably is. but I bet it costs quit a bit... it cost me $30 to wrap my header, and i left it installed in my car.. when my header eventually rots away I'll just buy a new one, and this time get a ceramic coated one....

I picked up the header at a bone yard for 10.00 Im gonna add extra weld around the flange,How about a sand blast job and a good rust proof heat paint then the wrap depending on the cost of ceramic coating
theres a pic. of the header around somewhere.
its nothing snazzy I dont think its a mds or antything like that dont know what it is really

If the header is in good shape, it would probably be worth it to get it ceramic coated. Otherwise wrap it and plan on getting a new one in a year or two...

I think for a single 4 pipe header it should cost about $50-$100. I know shops will do a pair for a small block V8 for about $100-$150
Ask for an extra coat. They usually do it for free, or just a little extra.

I have heard that header wrap tend to increase cracking on turbo manifolds and the turbo housing. Anybody have any experience with this?

I don't have any experience with turbo headers cracking, but i have heard that too, it stands to reason because the coating (or wrap) holds more heat in... one more thing about the wrap, my header rattled and buzzed bad before I put the wrap on, now its quiet.
I wonder if it would do any good to wrap a ceramic coated header? |

I think there is a sealer that you can get which you are suppossed to spray on the exhaust wrap, which is suppossed to protect it from the elements. I think you can also paint it.
When I researched header wrap I found that the largest issue is the accelerated corrosion of the downstream exhaust components. The wrap will hold in heat and the superheated exhaust gas will move downstream. When the heated gas flows through an exhaust component that is not wrapped (the downtube or cat) a greater amount of heat will soak into the part and it will exasperate the oxygen reaction with the exhaust part, i.e.: rust will set in at a faster rate. The solution was to wrap the entire exhaust or use a stainless exhaust.
Obviously, ceramic coating is the way to go. I would call a few shops, which you should be able to find in some hot rodding magazines, Turbo magazine, or a racing magazine. But I would consider a custom stainless exhaust to back it up, a stainless cat. would be a good pick as well. Besides bettering the life of your exhaust system, the ceramic coating will maintain exhaust gas velocity wich will bump up power a bit.
Yeah, it's all pretty expensive in the end, let's say $125 for the coating, $200 for the cat, $400 for s.s tailpipe, $725 total

All turbo owners and some regular guys should read Corky Bells book maximun boost. He also explains heat in the exhaust area.

To add to this. My mechanic told me the same thing about header wrap. He said he has seen headers disintagrate in under 500 miles that had been wrapped. In My case it was a simple and easy solution. I was not going to send it out to be coated. My heat shields were vibrating and driving me crazy. I could not stop this no matter what I did. So I removed them and wrapped the header. I tried to allow some of the heat to escape. I have very few miles on the set up at the moment. My car does not go out in the rain so water should not be an issue. Also I plan to upgrade to an MSDS header with ceramic coat when this one fails. So I will save $ till that time.
