Im 17 years old and gram was just going to give me her corrola for my first car but a friend of mine sold me his 79' 924 he had sitting in his garage for 650 bucks! Its in good running order and other than a lil minor body and interior work its a pretty sharp car. This message board is pretty sweet!

Fine choice! - and welcome - just don't mention the possible addition of neon, black, or valve stem lights and post only pictures taken in daylight...

Good to have a cool first car. My first was a dark green '70 Fiat 124 Spyder - fun thing but constantly needed major repairs. I bought it while in the Navy in 1977 from a CPO. It was first purchased in Belgium and had been to Calif, Texas, Florida and a few other states with its' several different Navy owners. I only took the first year of auto shop in high school, but keeping that thing running completed my education. I was more of a regular at the auto shop on base than at the club. That's alright. Still, it happened to be not running at the end of my enlistment and I wound up buying a '70 Olds Cutlass to tow it home to NJ. It was finally put to rest about 2 years later when I had it back down in Virginia Beach where I'd originally bought it. We were there for our yearly active duty in the reserves and was doing some "spirited" driving one night - winding out the gears a little more than usual - not totally nuts, just pushing it a bit...then I start to smell something burning. Pulled over, shut it off, popped the hood and shot my whole fire extinguisher onto the engine - no good - kept burning. A guy in a pickup stopped and gave me his extinguisher - I used that up too, but it still wouldn't go out. We had to step back and just watch it burn. That interior and convertible top went real fast. It was fully engulfed - a "working fire" as they say in the business when a fire truck pulled up right next to it - and I mean -right- next to it. They dumped some water on it and that was that - the end. I later found it was taken to a small dump right next to the off base bar a few of us used to go to to play pool.

Well, about 17 years after that purchase, I found myself on a used car lot looking at another dark green sports car and thinking, "here I go again", but the Porsche as I was about to find was a completely different beast. As I read somewhere in a comparison between Lotus and Porsche - At Lotus, they engineer a part to be just as strong as it needs to be and then make it that way. At Porsche, they find how strong a part needs to be, then make it two or three times stronger. I've had my Porsche for about 7 years now. Remember when you were 10? That's when I bought it and it was already 12 years old then. I guess your Porsche is older than you too...have fun and "respect your elders".

Go easy on that transmission (assuming it's a stick) on the 1-2 shift. Have fun, be safe, and try not to break anything expensive! Best of luck with your new car.

wow a 17 year-old with so much class. Welcome! You made a good choice. Sure, the Toyota will start every time, won't leak, the lights will always come on when you flick the switch. But when you're 17, or even 40 something, that's nothing compared to the sheer sexyness of the 924 this side of $30K.

You always remember your first car, great to think you'll remember yours as a Porsche

Anyone else noticed how the 924 "perverts" you into liking front-engined Porsches? Or even just German cars in general. That's what my first car (the 924) did.
