Ah Christmas Holidays and the wrenches come out of their beds! (the rebuild resumes)
Some questions, if anyone cares to reply:

The big bolt (24 mm) on the front end of the crankshaft seems to not want to break loose. Tried usual wrenches, impact driver… Is there a chance this is a reverse thread issue? Any thoughts on the best way to lock the crank to loosen this monster? (the engine is pulled, on a stand and pretty well stripped)
One can tank an engine block, but can (should) one tank a turbo unit to clean it up?
How ‘bout them injector lines? Small black plastic tube, larger black rubber sleeve over it – what do people do to replace these when they are cracked?
Any thoughts on cleaning the CIS pieces?
Also the water pump seems semi-frozen. Well, it was frozen, but I worked it loose and now it’s just stiff and snaggy.
This vehicle was parked almost a decade ago after its owner broke the timing belt – valves, piston damage. Apparently all else was beautiful at the time…
Thanks and all the best in 2008!
B

Standard thread, have you tried a impact gun (not sure what you mean by "driver")?

Not a good idea.

Some have used heat shrink tubing.

Normal cleaning works.

I'd buy a new pump.

Hi Brian,

The water pump is a cheap part, $50, I would just replace it.

To get the crank nut loose (and tightened) here is what I did. I took a long piece of angle iron, drilled 2 holes in it to attach to the flywheel, then propped the bottom of the angle iron against the base of the engine stand (by rotating the crank). This will lock the crank in place so you can apply lots of torque with a breaker bar. Works like a charm.

I wouldn't tank a turbo, at least not assembled, maybe if it was stripped to pieces.

I'd replace the fuel injection lines with stock ones from Porsche. Probably pricey, but I wasn't able to find a fitting to go into the fuel distributor that would allow the use of aftermarket hoses.

For cleaning the fuel distributor, WUR, etc, I would just rinse with fresh gas. DO NOT DISASSEMBLE THE FUEL DISTRIBUTOR.

Have fun, send me a private message if you want to connect by phone or in person, I can't remember if you are in Edmonton or not.
