After pulling off Micro-switches and readjusting them so they actually work, I finally got, at idle, well warmed up, after much trial and error, the "closed loop" action about which I've heard so much, multi meter doing what it's supposed to do when connected to the 02 sensor, despite it not being able to sample as fast as the 02 sensor, etc etc. You can definitely get a very good indication of what's going on -- numbers tumbling up and down between 150mv and 700mv, more or less, in a steady procession.

I was just about to buy myself a beer when the car stopped running. An hour later I held in my hand a dead Bosch fuel pump. "Dead" as in, running but not pumping, even with new check valve removed (assuming the check valve resistance killed it's old lame impeller) -- how often does that happen? What's in these things to break, anyway? I would have thought running = pumping but no dice
