In a 1978 Porsche 924, is there just the one speaker on the dash, or are there more?

Should be just one. It's easy to look at - the grill over it lifts off. Just pry it up gently. Mine comes off by hand - no tools needed.

(That's all that's in the dash - if you have a fader control to the front left of your shifter, you should be able to tell if you have rear speakers -and I think you should have them. They'll be on both sides in the rear next to the rear seat.)

The centre dash speaker is a 4x6 if I do recall, but the one I have seen could be a replacement. You can but a 4x6 in the door! And a pair of 6x9's in the back.

100x4 amp, and you're good.

OE on my car were all 4x6 oval speakers. I replaced the rears with Sony XS-PL46 (4x6 plate style) - woofer and tweeter side-by-side. As I recall, the mounting plates had to be trimmed with tin snips to fit. They're 80W, 4 Ohm.
The front got a Pioneer TS-4602 oval coaxial 2-way (on 4x6 plate - again, had to be trimmed slightly) - oval woofer/midrange with tweeter mounted front-center. That's 60W, 4 Ohm. - Only came in a box of two, so I have an extra.

I've been looking to add a front speaker, do you want to sell your extra one? So do you have 2 rears and 1 front hooked up as a center channel? If so, how did you wire it?

Speakers for 924's were done two ways that I know of:

Some have a 4 Ohm speaker on the rear right and 8 Ohm speakers on the rear left and front (for a total of 3 speakers). In this case, the rear left and front are on the left channel. The rear right is on the right channel. The (2) 8 Ohm speakers, wired in parallel, combine to make 4 Ohms, so as far as the stereo is concerned, there are two balanced 4 Ohm loads connected to it. There should be no front-rear fader control for this setup.

The other setup is the one I have. All three OE speakers were 4 Ohm and there is a fader to the front-left of the shifter. I just replaced all the speakers with 4 Ohm speakers, so I had no rewiring to do - just attached to the existing wires.

So, if you have the first setup, you need an 8 Ohm speaker for the front unless you're going to wire them up different than Porsche did. The second setup will take my spare 4 Ohm speaker with no mods. I'll sell it, but I got another request through e-mail about an hour before yours. (I think both you guys cars would need an 8 Ohm though.) -

Serial numbers up to "92 A0432556" and "93 A0152762" have the first setup (8 Ohm in front).

Serial numbers after those have the second setup (4 Ohm in front + fader).
