Hello,

I'm new to the board, and I have a friend at work that has offered t0 give me his 924 for "Free". However with all free things there is a catch...It has been sitting in his garage semi torn apart for the past 10 years!
He claims that it ran before he started pulling it apart, but a free car let alone a Porche is nothing to sneeze at. My question is would it really be worth my while for me to take him up on his offer, and take the car and restore/fix it up?

How much could I have to put into it before I got it running again, if say it has had gas sitting in the tank, and just everyday normal maintaince tune up after a 10 year absence?

From my experience, resurrecting these cars is harder than on most. When the fuel sits in the car for so long it turns into gum, thats gum in the injectors, the lines, the fuel distributor, the filters, accumulators. you name it. And well if it was me, I'd drain the gas right out the bottom of the thing, pull everything from before the filter (the underhood one) and let the fuel pump run. After that i'd suggest pullin the ENTIRE fuel injection system and tossing it OUT THE WINDOW! buy a dual carb set up (ask alex roy if hes still got his for sale) toss a lower pressure fuel pump on and you'll have it ready to fire. What all is taken apart on the car?

Now, there's no ned to be that extreme. Besides, once you clean out the fuel system, it'll be far more reliable than some alternatives...

Check out the FAQ, it's got some pointers on how to resurrect the car, specifically how to clean out the fuel system. You are definitely going to want to drain that old fuel out, maybe flush the tank clean - varnish is a big enemy of the FI system - before even trying to start it.

As long as the body's solid, no question it's worth it. The biggest problem area is the battery box at the base of the windshield, check for rot. IT can be repaired but is a PITA. Rot on the front fenders behind the front wheels is not uncommon, but not as bad usually.

Other than that, I'd wonder why he took it apart and exactly what of it is taken apart.

The cars also can suffer from some water leaks, at the rotted battery box, at the sunroof, and at the rear hatch seal, but all are repairable. Naturally the first is the worst, as it requires a new patch panel to be welded in

Thanks, this is great stuff!

I wont be able to go see it until the 20th, but I will take your advice and check everything out.

Turns out the reason he took it apart was to work on the engine, and to take off the trim and front and end bumpers so he could paint it. So right now it still has its engine out, which may not be a bad thing, since I'd have to restore it before I do much of anything. It'll be good to already have the engine taken out so I can work on it?

Thanks for the advice, I welcome any more that you can give, as well as once I get into working on it.

Read that faq start to finish. There's a wealth of info there. And welcome to the board.

If you're handy with a wrench, go for it. These are great cars. I went on this site before I bought mine, and it pretty much convinced me. Most of us can't afford other models of Porsches, but this one is well worth the time and (relative) amount of money needed to have a fine vehicle. I did have a scare with my fuel pump a while back (I have a fuel pump in my tank, and was afraid it was gunked up). But it wasn't. And I think the FAQ here even has a procedure for cleaning out the tanks/fuel pumps.

Good luck!!!
