I've been holding out for pics, but they're still lagging. At any rate, two weekends ago was the last race weekend of the Waterford Hills season. While the ITB Championship was already decided the previous weekend, sadly, we still had plenty of competition for the overall winner; long story short, we spent all 3 races going wheel-to-wheel with Doug in the Bimmer, making him work for every lap. Additionally, we had the IT7 1st-gen RX7 of Bob Cross, a very experienced long-time competitor running at the same pace and mixing it up with us, to great result!
Teammate Chris Marsh and I also traded cars for the co-driver race - a separate race that allows drivers to swap cars.
Doug out-qualified us for the first Class race, and while we fought hard, most of the competition was with the RX7, having a great time passing back and forth, eventually finishing just behind the RX7.
The codriver qualifying went well for Chris in the #77, but he only matched his best previous pace in his own car, a 1:24. My session (in the #55) didn't go as well, the car lost power on the out-lap; turned out to be broken distributor wires, as well as a broken alternator wire preventing the battery from charging. Both were fixed by our crack crew between races, and Chris had no problem making his race.
Between races, we also (Chris and I) reviewed the data taken from him driving the #77 car, and figured out where he was losing the most time. Chris put this knowledge to good effect during the Co-driver race, shaving a whole two seconds off and running a mid-1:22 in the #77 car. Apparently the car agreed with him!
Meanwhile, I'd started at the very back, due to the lack of a qualifying time, and was working my way through the other ITB cars to catch Chris. I managed to close a bit, but not quite far enough to work on passing him, when the pivot bolt came out of the alternator! The car quickly lost charging and cooling, so I parked it immediately just before halfway, to try to avoid blowing the headgasket. Like the wiring, this was easily fixed and the car was back in action without Chris having to miss a race.
Next ITB race, we started as we finished (2nd in ITB, 4th overall), but we had a great run Lap 1 coming down the back straight. However as we close in on the end side-by-side, ready to pass on the brakes, the double-yellows come out; a rookie in a VW has popped a driveshaft and parked on-track (bad form!!! ), so we have to back out and run under a full-course yellow for a few laps. After the green came out, we tried very hard, but were unable to quite put the pressure on Doug, actually falling back due to some errors, coming home in 2nd again.
Final Feature race, Bob (in the RX7) and I had both out-qualified Doug; the front two cars in front of us elected to start at the back (for more fun) leaving Bob and I with the front row (see why I wanted to show the pics?)! We got off to a great start, Bob pulled a bit on the start, and Doug latched on to my bumper. I couldn't shake him, but likewise he couldn't make any ground on me and put in a serious challenge. As we charged down the backstraight on the last lap, Doug attempted the usual Hail-Mary pass down the inside into 6; we charged side-by-side from 6, through Paddock Turn, then the Esses, with me winning the drag-race into Swamp Turn, the last turn onto the back straight. As I was to the inside, Doug tried to back off and try a cross-over move, but to no avail; the 924 is always stronger coming out of Swamp than the Bimmer. We crossed the finish line in front of Doug by almost 2/10ths of a second, taking the ITB checker.
Final note on the season; due to our solid performances, Doug Spencer took top honors over ALL Waterford drivers, winning 1st place in the Top Ten driver ranking... but I took 5th! This is quite something, quite an honor, and I've never managed to even make it into the Top Ten before...
So we will have a trophy to pick up afterall, at this year's banquet... _________________ Vaughan Scott

if you're ever heading over to kalamazoo i'd love to pick your brain for some driving knowledge.
i'm not running wheel to wheel just yet, but any ideas help me out even though i'm only running SOLO I.
next season assuming we don't have anymore catastrophic failures (one jerkface in a ITE Z06= one beat up EP RX7, and one well aged 91 CRX Si motor= 3 holes in a block) i'd like to bring home one of those extra large plastic trophies at the end of the season.
this was my first season and i only ran two events, got one 1st place driving our rabbit for the first time over at the Autobahn Country Club North course in E modified, and a 2nd place in D modified in our CRX Si the day before the motor popped over at blackhawk farms.
every meet anybody from bronco motorsports? |

I haven't, no...
Most important advice I can give is simple, yet so hard to follow: slow in, fast out, and friends don't let friends early apex! You should be able to be WOT (wide open throttle) at the apex; if you can't, you F'd up. You must also let the car track out completely and properly, in order to accelerate - don't pinch your track-outs. _________________ Vaughan Scott
