Hello everyone.....
I have been finally driving my 78 924 NA for the summer and have a new issue to deal with. After having fuel problems in the past, due to a long sitting in a garage from the PO, I have recently been dealing with a strong raw gas smell. I haven't noticed any leaking, nor have I noticed any difference when there is a full tank compared to any empty tank. Let me tell you the headaches are coming from the smell and I generally put the hood up and leave the garage door open to ventilate. Upon searching I think I have noticed a stronger smell near the WUR. I have replaced the unit when I first got the vehicle and don't think it has gone faulty yet.
Thoughts??
BTW...I plan on selling the vehicle in the spring due to family issues....sucks cuz it is a fun drive, but would like the soon to be owner not encounter any headaches. I know hte cost that I have put into it won't be gotten out, but I guess I am kind hearted to a fault. _________________ 924 work in progress |

| Could there be a crack in the gas tank on the upper part. Could the fuel neck be cracked where it meets the tank? |

Thanks for the quick response!!!! I will check it out for sure this evening. Am I able to check that connection through the interior of the car? _________________ 924 work in progress |

I think you can check the neck by reaching up under the fender, maybe. You might have to get under the car. I've never done it. Also is the car full of gas? 1/2 full? Some people when they do have a crack up top, only 1/2 fill the car and that keeps the smell way down. I assume if you drive up or down steep hills or take fast turns the smell could come back. |

When my 924 had a strong smell of gas, the fuel neck had to be replaced.

I had recently spoke with someone that has extensive knowledge with the 924/944 systems. He had mentioned that a common problem regarding these cars is the fuel lines that connect the WUR and the fuel dizzy. Afetr the inspection, I think mine are a little bit on the rough side. Does anyone know where I might be able to get these? I am currently driving a 1978 924 NA. Also, I had recently aquired some new fuel lines from Porsche, a nice garage sale find for cheap, but the connectors are banjo fittings on each side. I currently have the screw on connection to the injectors in the car. Anyone have a part number for the banjo fitted injectors or input on what might be available ? _________________ 924 work in progress |

Also check your fuel accumulator/dampers...both of mine were blown and leaking within 20 miles of driving...
I would check Pelicanparts.com for the fuel lines...they have the factory diagrams that you can browse through...makes finding the part you're looking for very easy. _________________ -1977 924, 4-Spd...Gone

Thanks Johnathan! BTW, I had noticed your 77 is a five speed. May I ask what tranny you had installed? _________________ 924 work in progress |
