I found an 82 N/A in a local u-pull-it. Seems to be in good condition. Most of the interior is gone, but the engine seems mostly intact. Since I'm doing a minor overhaul on my own head, I thought it might be good to have all the spare parts plus a head to practice porting.
So now the big question: what will I need for tools to remove the head right there in the junkyard? |

Socket set with extensions, utility knife, 12 point Allen bits for the head bolts, metric wrenches from 10 to 19MM. And a pair of jeans with big pockets to swipe all the loose plastic switches and doo-dads with.

Diesel,
That was the worse suggestions that you gave the previous poster. It is uncalled for and as an adult you should be ashamed of yourself.
You forgot to include a large jacket with big pockets. Nothing like multiple pockets all over. Bring a philips and a flat handle screwdriver with you. |

| 12-pt allen wrench? What about regular 10 mm allen wrench socket? All of the 924's I've worked on lately have 10 mm allen bolts not 12-pts. Although I've seen both. |

How about a hydraulic jack and stands to raise it enough to get to the exhaust manifold bolts? The recyclers around here won't let you use theirs.
Vince, have you un into any Porsche models lately? Grandson loved the Buick.

Kroil, WD-40, or Liquid wrench. Heat the exhaust studs up real hot with small propane torch. Let cool for a minute and spray with favorite flavor. Let soak while you attack head bolts.

When I was about 10 or 11, I took some Hostess Ding Dongs from the local grocery store without paying. Put them under my shirt. I was hungry and...oh, uh...back to the subject...
Thanks for all the help. Think I have everything I need except the headbolt stuff. Do we know if an '82 will have 12 or hex allen heads? If 12, can a hex allen be stuck in to work, or will it break off?
I'm thinking about leaving as much attached to the head as possible: injectors, brackets, etc. |

Just one last question before I get to the junkyard either tomorrow or Friday...
I was reading the Haynes and it said after 1980 expect 12-point socket heads on the head bolts. Are these later bolts compatible with the typical 12-point sockets that work on hex-head bolts? Anyone remember what size socket is required?
Thanks. |

| I'm getting vague recollections that they're 10mm. |

| No, scratch that. I was thinking of another car in my past that took a regular old 10mm 12 pt socket to remove the head bolts. I replaced my head bolts with Raceware fasteners years ago. The bolts I took off ('82 931) are like giant cap screws - they take a 10mm 6 sided hex (or allen) wrench/bit. |

Looking at the Porsche parts listing: It shows different part numbers for 924na and 924 Turbo/Carrera head bolts, so you won't necessarily have bolts with 6 pt. socket heads like mine were. Also, it doesn't give different part numbers for pre- and post-1980 bolts. Maybe they changed the bolt heads but used the same part number?
I would think that if you do end up having to deal with 12 pt. socket head bolts, you'll need the correct 12 pt. star bit. |
