Is there anyway to repair the fuel pumps check value? I already had to replace the fuel pump in my '78 924, since the was dirt and leaves in the fuel lines!! (The pervious owner neglected and abused it!) So i know the pump itself is good, just that it was installed before the new gas tank, so the garbage in the fuel destroied the check value.
F.Y.I If the fuel pump check value is bad, the car can start beautifuly when cold, but just crank over after sitting for 20 mintues.

| You can get a check valve and mount it after the fuel pump. You can get check valves from www.mscdirect. You might have to cut the rubber fuel line and used barbed fittings to install. I've done that on a car that had an in tank pump and I didn't want to drop the tank. |

Check valves are cheap so change them when you have hard starting. Also check the fuel pump and replace the fuel filter.
CLEAN OUT THE TANK
Run the gas tank down until the light comes on. Then remove all the rugs, etc from the trunk floor and remove the sending unit. Remove slowly because there is gas in it. Remove the fuel pump. You will need a large 5 gallon bucket to catch the gas. Remove the gas and then filter the gas to remove rust and dirt. Get another large bucket to catch the filtered gas when you pour the filtered gas in the gas tank from above. I did this at least four times until the rust stopped coming from the tank. I removed a cupful of rust. After the fourth or fifth time dispose of the gas and replace the sending unit, fuel filter, etc and fill with fresh gas.
I replaced all of the above and changed the grounds [5] in my 931. The car starts all the time and idles fine. I did this about two years ago and it starts without stutter or hesitation.

| If you remove your gas tank, in your garage, make sure gas hot water heater, and gas clothes dryer, pilot lights are turned off. The fumes are heavier than air and can travel to ignition sources and cause a fire |
