I had my 87 924S inspected at the dealer for the PCA free inspection in march and the mechanic told me that i was leaking some steering fluid into oneof the boots on either side of the steering rack and that the rack would need to be replaced in the future. He made it sound like it wasn't an immediate thing but my steering has been getting very loose and there is more play in the wheel. I have been given a few suggestions by friends and I was wondering if there is any way to tell without taking it apart adn looking for the part that is worn out. If it is the steering rack, how difficult is that to replace? _________________ 87 924S |

Hey,
i am not sure if the 924 S has the same steering as the normal 924,
if so, you couldt use parts from Volkswagen Rabbit, first series. The steering is the same in at least the first years of 924th.
Greetings

Rebuild the rack using the rennbay kit (rennbay.com), it's way cheaper. But that only causes leaks, not play. More likely your play is from worn tie rod ends. _________________ Vaughan Scott

You may also suspect the steering coupler that ties the steering wheel shaft to the rack. The U-joints in it wear out. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor
