1981 Lemans results. 924 GTP in 8th place overall. 924 GTR in 11th overall and 1st in class.

http://www.experiencelemans.com/en-us/dept_156.html

BTW the GTR also won its class in 82 and 83 but due to Porsche coming out with the 956 they ranked lower in the overall rating.

well the GTP is a 944 DOHC but yea...the GTR uses the 2.0 block and head.

Think you mean SOHC. They used 4 cylinders from the 928 engine which didn't have dual overhead cams until much later (86?).

The ultimate development of the 924 in its race trim was the 924 Carrera GTR race car, which produced 375 hp (280 kW) from a highly modified version of the 2.0 L I4 used in all 924s except for the 944 Carrera GTP which used a highly modified as yet unreleased 944 2.5 litre DOHC 16v Porsche unit. This last model variant came 7th overall at Le Mans 24 Hours and spent the least time out of any other car in the pits.

Paul,

I've seen that article before and have a couple problems with it. 1) it says the 928 project was started before the 924. Actually the 924 was started before the 928 for VW/Audi. Hence the earlier project number. It wasn't revived as a Porsche project until after the 928 project was started. This has to the source of the confusion factor. 2) The pictures I've seen (anyone have a link?) showed the single cam. 2 valve, set up. During that period (and now) the 4 valve engines generated a lot more heat and provided minimal advantage on a turbocharged engine.

924 GTP was indeed DOHC 2.5liter turbocharged engine and it had dual cam pulleys like true DOHC cars not chain connecting two cams.
There's very little information about it and part of the reason is that there were whopping four engines made total!
I've seen pics of the engine in car, incredible piece of machinery!

And Dennis, 4 valves provides significant advantage on turbocharging, especially Porsche 16v heads that flow almost twice cfm as 2 valve 951 head. It means that much less boost is needed for same power output.

this is the GTR:

see the 4 nose vents.
this is the 924 GTP. you can see that its a bit different. and if you do a search on google on "924 carrera GTP" the first picture you get will be a 9xx with a DOHC engine in it.

you could be right...then again i could be right.....here is another link that says that the GTP was actualy a GTS with 320 HP.

EDIT: here is that picture paul:

Right or wrong it was an awesome car. It's a shame that Porsche didn't keep the 924 Marque. It is obvious the buying public could care less that it had been designed for VW/Audi.

BTW the engine pictured above appears to be a 944S engine due to the single timing gear. Also, that appears to be a production head, not a one off (or 4 off) developmental head.

Here's a bit low-quality pic of the original '81 924 GTP car.
Note that it has 16v head and turbo inlet manifold. NO CARBS. You can barely see, but there's dual cam pulleys.

There was an article of the 924 GTP in Excellence, May issue of 2002. Can't find it anymore, but if someone get's that issue, it'd be very nice to see a scanned article.
