Hi,
I know noting about tyres but I need a new set because my current ones that came with my "ebay car" are in a bad state and will fail annual car test. The current tyres are 205/60 R14 on all four.
I have the original owners manual and it states “6J x 14 with 185/70 HR 14 tyres”.
Also Haynes and Goodyear website state the same as the owners manual
Should I buy 185/70 R14 tyres or just replace 205/60 R14?
Why were the tyres changed to the larger size? Surely on a car without power steering this makes it more difficult to steer?
Can someone explain this to me?
Thanks |

Tires were changed because a previous owner wanted the widest tires that would fit. This would improve cornering, but as you note, make steering heavier.
Your manual says different because "60 series" tires were far less common when your car was built than they are now.

PS I would use the 205/60s! _________________ Toofah King Bad

I like the original size tire on the car. I ran both. The 185's seem a little more lively on the road. _________________ 1978 924 95 mile daily driver.

I knew that positive thinking thing wouldn't work. |

i swapped out 205/60 on the front to 195/60 and it made a huge difference to the steering. now i just gotta decide on either 205 or 195 for the rears
