Ok well i finnaly got my 80 931 running right. So i decide ill take it for a test run.
I cruised around a parking lot in 1st and second, and it seemed ok, but then when i turned onto the street put it in 3 again things seem ok, i accelerate, and then try to put it into 4 BUT IT DOESNT GO!!, ok i try fith, seemed to go into gear but when i let up ont eh clutch it popped out of gear, of i try one more time and harder this time, and hear thie NASTY GRINDING!!, but it does go into gear
thats not good, Ok i try to put it into 4th one more time and this time it goes in but with the same grinding!!
oh boy..
when i got the car is was stuck in reverse, so i pulled the front tranny cover off and and found the shift rod was out of position, then i filled it back up with redline mt90 i think.
What could be the problem???
I think the clutch is fully disengaging as when i first put the car in gear it went in just fine and when i was at speed and pushed the clutch in the car slowed and the rpms went up.
This is such a bummer, that tranny was such a pain to pull out and put back in.
Sigh... |

This is interesting. Could the grinding be from the synchros maybe? I would suspect the linkage being at fault for the missing 4th.
I am buying one of these trannies, I'm not entirely sure what condition it is, but I can't beat the price.

This is my first car, with an expensive tranny. I can shift, and I'm pretty good for a new driver, but I don't think I'm quite into good double clutching and rev matching...
I need a beater to destroy...

You know Im gonna put a hole in mine after I remove the rear seat like Vaughn did then
use a couple of light guage metal studs and cover the back in 1/4 plywood painted the same color as my car I think a hole back there for the linkage is a good thing.. |

I think you have something there, Joe. Vaughn, actually...
If you cut the original piece out carefully with a dremel, you could put some weather stripping around it, to seal it, then just add a couple of latches, or belt style buckles to keep it tightly closed.

Anyhow, since I'm buying one this week, what are some common problems with G31s, aside from synchros?

Linkage bushings get shot, and the conical bolt in the linkage sometimes comes loose. This causes the synchros to get mashed because of it not being fixed and misaligning the gears. Of all 931s I see there problems are usually related to the owners being lazy and not fixing when they are supposed to, so your previous owner may have left the car in bad condition and drove it with shot bushings/loose linkage. If the car was stuck in reverse, this is a sign that maybe previous owner drove the car a lot with the bushings shot, and in result synchros worn out.
As for the cutting of the hole it's a good idea, unless you are a pompous purest who thinks that cutting a hole in a car is going to ruin the car. Just put some of that sealant stuff that the gas tank access port covers have on it (that gewy black stuff). I'd also paint the shiny metal with rust eater primer after you cut, so that it doesn't rust. Always remember that the brake line that winds in there is really close, so cut at a high spot and feel for the brake line with your finger, and draw a line not to cut anywhere near there. |

yeah i cut the hole a long time ago since its a real pain to get to the bolt holding the linkage.
SO now about the grinding, how bad is bad?? I mean how long would it take to destroy the gears?
Im going to check the clutch slave, but if its ok then i guess the tranny is the problem
Im not fammiliar enough with the tranny's gear speeds to double clutch.

I think it Id make sure the linkage was right
can you get another tranny easily enough if so try it out..Im thinken linkage well because it wont go into 4th & poped out of 5th.. I dont have any real tranny experiance though.. just given ya hope..Howed this start
driven it this way is gonna lead to damage ofthe dog teeth gears if it grinds alot and thats really not good because you cant get those gears anymore.Mine doesnt grind in any gears just hesitates.. pisses me off 2 |

Yeah, I'm going to overhaul the linkage, give it new bushings and everything. I'll probably just get a short shift kit, because it has a lot of the pieces already...
Any suggestions for parts, bushings, shift kits?
