I ditched my clock, never saw the point of it. In its place went a nice 300F VDO oil temperature guage. Installation was simple, apart from running the wire to the sender, which was a time consuming pain. Running on the highway today the temperature sat just below 200, in the city just above 200, it is a pretty cool day here for the fall, just below 10 degrees C. I'm assuming at plus 30 summer temps when the car gets used more I'll see higher oil temps.

Here are the parts I used from Summit Racing:

VDO-310106 VDO 300F TEMPERATURE GAUGE $25.95
VDO-323055 VDO 300F TEMPERATURE SENDER $10.99

Sender

Gauge

Nooiice Mate!

I didn't know VDO gauges were that cheap. I see you're paying respect to your heritage, changing the original phillips screws for square ones. Never seen them in Germany.

Yeah, when I got the car (late 2002) it was actually missing the centre guage cluster, so when I eventually got one and all the guages I just used whatever screws were handy. They do the job

What size thread is the sender? Presumably you had to tap the thread in the sump (oil-pan) yourself?

Excellent work. Yeah, I'd like to know about the sender install too - did you need an adapter, or was the thread the correct size? My sender is M10x1.0, installed in the filter mount, but I don't think it would've been the right size.

IIRC, this is the stock location for a stock oil temp gauge, and most if not all 924's have a plug there - but there is a threaded hole.

If this screws in without need for an adapter - awesome!!!

On 931's, that hole is used to return oil from the air/oil seperator.
It should be m14x1.5, although Ideola found his to be m16. -But I suspect his was stripped, re-drilled and re-tapped at some point by a PO.

Still I'd wait to hear what size Chrenan found his to be. , nudge-nudge.
If you have an m10 sender, you could probably take an end fitting from an old fuel filter (the 931 filters at least are m14x1.5) and tap the inside to m10.

Looks good, love the drain cock too.

You gonna shrink wrap that connection on the sender?

Thread size was M14 X 1.5, the hole in the pan was already there, filled with a bolt. Every 924 I've seen has had this extra hole in the oil pan.

The thread was exactly right, no adapter needed.

If you look closely you'll see it already is shrink wrapped. The female adapter I used came with shrink wrap installed tight on the metal portion, I just had to shrink it to fit on the wire. Looks so good you can barely see the shrink wrap! Another great product from Canadian Tire.

Cheap and the new ones are much better than the old in terms of lighting. The old ones just light up around the rim. With the new one, the white markings on the gauge light up, but it still only needs a single bulb. Looks much better. If a guy was really fussy he could replace all the old style gauges with new ones and get much better lighting.

I just did this mod with a used oil temp gauge from a late 80's / early 90's Audi model in celcius.

The VDO-323055 VDO 300F TEMPERATURE SENDER $10.99
was a perfect fit!!!!!
Nice find Chrenan!!! Thanks

Nice work augidog, I like the Celcius gauge you have better, more appropriate for a Euro car...
