I am totally amazed at the quality of the work being posted in this section. It's really magazine-quality stuff.

With all the hard work that is involved with producing a how-to I think you should include some sort of copyright and usage notice in the post. Something along the lines of "This work is copyright (c) John Doe 2007. You may copy, print or store this work for private purposes only. This work may not be reproduced in a commercial publication, including electronic publications, without my express permission."

I'm just thinking; how it would feel to pick up next month's Excellence mag and see your How-to with someone else's name at the top.

I know that just by posting something copyright is automatically awarded but there's nothing like spelling out what people can do with your work.

What do you think?

(I got most of my legal training from watching Boston Legal so my example usage notice is probably total BS)

as far as the web goes (and anything else for that matter), you can say something is copyright'ed without owning a copyright. All you really need to say is
Quote:
©2007 Firstname Lastname. All right reserved

In 1989, revisions were made to the Copyright Act of 1909 that clearly defined that registration is not a condition of copyright protection. But, the law does provide advantages to those who do register:

All in all, if you ever wish to file and infringement suit, you are required to register your work if it originates in the US.

The tricky thing is the fact that this board and its members are international, and laws are different in each country. Its not necessarily a moot point to state a copyright, it will put up a red flag to the smart folks out there - its the ignorant ones that always cost you money in the long run.
