Hey guys! (and gals)
I am the owner of a not running '87 924S, and an 86 944 (parts) I am familiar with the running and the problems of the 2.5L engines. My mechanical knowlege is limited to simple jobs like brakes, alternators, belts, stereo installs, and changing oil. (simple stuff)
There is an opportunity to buy a '77 924. From my understanding, the 2.0 cars are much simpler to maintain and work on that 2.5L cars.
The car in question has the head torn off (replacing a headgasket, never finished) of it and is in terrible all around shape. THe windshied is cracked, the interior has been bastardized by multipl;e owners who thoght it need a stereo and sunlight/wear. The car has 130k, and the asking price is 500. My reckoning the car is worth about 150 to 300.
Is in your opinion this car a good or a bad investment for a quick fix to drive project?
God knows it's fun having as many porshes as possible...
Or would it be smarter to just fix my 924S which needs a water pump and timing belt etc once over to be quite sound (enough to drive over 100 miles and have a prayer making it back). _________________ 1987 Porsche 924S

Sounds like a parts car at best to me. It'd probably cost more to get it in serviceable condition than it would to do a front-of-engine service on your 924S...
Might make a small profit if you bought it for a couple of hundred bucks and parted it out..? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Not really worth much, and if the cosmetics are shot, no real point to it. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I think You should buy it and restore it, they started 924 production in 1976 and this is one of the earlyest models You got there it is a good project and heritage for Your grandchildren I donīt think You can make much money with this car by sellin it to parts and for me it would be a crime
Project cars are good because as much as You want to finish Your project as soon as possible, You canīt and don`t have to, they take time, money but what they give back is all the contentment You`ll ever need.
Allan has spoken
EDIT: If You are not a project car kind of guy donīt even bother buying it cause they are never good investments! _________________ Porsche 924-79-2,2L |

Thanks for the advice everyone. I agree the car is not much better than parts, it would be a prayer (far form reality) that the car will run if I slap the head back on and put a belt on it. But, some people have more money and (hence) pray much better than I.
My 924 is much closer to running condition and looks good yet, though it needs it's fair share of work.
If anyone is looking for such a car for parts or project I'd be happy to pm you the owner's telephone number. _________________ 1987 Porsche 924S
