I need to finally upgrade my suspension. I am planning on getting 250 lb springs, and maybe 26mm or 27mm torsion bars.. my question is; how hard is it really to put in new torsion bars? how many hours would it take to complete for someone who's good at figuring stuff out, a good mechanic, but doesn't know jack shit about installing new torsion bars... also what shocks would you recomend for someone who doesn't have much money left over because he just upgraded everything else on his suspension?

I don't recommend the KYB rear shocks. I had them on my 924 and it felt like it was going to fly off of the road sideways. The front KYB struts are decent, and not too expensive, but I'd keep your old shocks unless they're dangerous, and save up for some Bilsteins or Koni Sports for the back.

as for replacing the torsions. you can do it yourself, but be prepared to have to do it more than once to get the ride height just right on the splines. i believe the 944 faq has a good description on how to do it.

as a tip- the bar splines can rust a bit in the endcaps, if they don't pull out easily then soak them in kerosene (or equivalent) and then pull the caps off.

also, your shocks and struts are valved to match your stock 160# front springs and ~140# rear rates. if you drastically change your spring rate, your shocks aren't going to be able to keep up (they won't be able to dampen such a strong spring and you'll get bounce). i highly recommend using sport shocks (either bilstein or koni) with the rates you're talking about. use ~200# in the front and a 25mm bar in the back and you could probably get away with stock shocks. but i would say that's about the limit.

good luck- have fun with the torsions,

yeah I definately want good shocks, its just that good ones (koni, etc.) are rediculously expensive, I would spend more on shocks then I would on new springs and torsion bars... I found a good tutorial on torsion bar removal..

http://www.tech-session.com/Paragon/Tech/944_tbar_main.htm

should be very helpful when I do it...

I changed the shocks/struts on my son's '78 924 to Koni Sports (yellow)...They were more $$ than other options but totally transformed the car...I'll be doing the same to my 951

RD enterprises you can find at the back of Excellence magazine for the best prices on shocks. I shopped and finally bought HD bilsteins from them. front and rear cost me aoubt $400
I use 23mm front sways with 250 lbs springs and heavy duty springs in front.
924 77.5 rear Bilsteins with Weltmeister 22mm
79 931 Euro Bilsteins with stock 18mm rear bar
The 77.5 with this setup handles better than the turbo. Why? Idon't know. Both have non stock bushings in front. The turbo seems too tight with this setup and yet the NA will out handle the turbo. Go figure.
Both cars have been lowered so that the car is level or I matched the back to the front being the springs lowered the car 1-1 1/2 inches.
