How many of you guys have the sump guard fitted to your cars (the thing that looks like a crab's belly!)?

I've never had one for my car, but the other week I was looking at a scrapped 924 ( ) in my local salvage yard and it had one fitted. It was practically impossible to get at anything underneath the car. What was worse, when I tried to remove it, the bolts just span as if they had nuts behind them, but there was no way of getting to the nuts! No wonder people throw those things away once they come off!

So, I was thinking, what function do they serve (besides collecting dirt and oil) - aerodynamic? cooling?

Mike - I definately favor using the aluminum belly pan. I believe it helps to route airflow under the car and I am certain that it helps keep the engine bay components free of dirt. It weighs almost nothing. Mine is easily removed when the car is raised via 7 bolts (using a 10mm socket). There are no nuts involved (at least on my car). I've included a few shots of my pan. The last shot shows how clean the underside of the engine bay stays if a Pan is used.

My car has a large welded up patch on the forward lower part of the sump. PO smashed it open on the ground so I'd say a belly pan would be a worthy precaution.

Thanks for the pix, Ron.

I'll keep an eye open for a sump guard on eBay.

...and it says all the mounts are good - usually 1 or more are ripped through.

Just to muddy the waters compared to the previous thread; when I had mine off the car it ran cooler - which made sense to me.

Oo-er. I'm in two minds now. The last thing I want is for the engine to run any hotter.

PS, You've been quiet for a while, Chris.
