I am preparing my 924s for DE events at the end of the year. I have just baout lal of the maintenence stuff done so its time to start gettingmy wheels and tires worked out. I have 3 sets of wheels to choose from. I have the original wheels which are 15x6f 15x7r, a set of 15x7, and a set of 16x7f 16x8r. Im leaning towards getting some decent street tires on the 15x6/7s in 205 50 15. I foudn a good deal on the new bridgestone re050a @$79 a piece in 225 50 16 though. Just looking for some advice. Thanks

i'm no expert but if its a windy short track you should get wide tires with low profile and if its a more straight line track...then get another car...you'll be humiliated in the 924

when i ran my stock 924 with narrow bullshit tires i was drifting all over and my time was beaten(0.01 seconts less) by a well equiped FWD 1.6 TS Alfa...thats ~160 HP as i know.

so i learned a lesson...wide low profile tires do wonders.

Well Im not too concerned with being fast right now. In fact I have a feeling until I get used to the car Ill be slower than I was in my GTI. Im just trying to learn the car right now and I basically want to make sure im not going to put too small of a tire on the car. THe 205 50 15 is about 2" shorter than the OEM size but after I did the math I came up with a theoretical top speed of 125 or so. I primarily run VIR (long straights) and Summit Point and I never got MY gti above 120 so I think Ill be ok.

At VIR I ran my 15x7 phone dials with 225/45WR15 Kumho ECSTA V700 tires. They worked real well. I now run 225/50WR15 Kumho ECSTA V710 tires and those give me better gearing for the tight turns and do not kill me on the long straights.

Recommend, for track use, the 15x7 all around and Toyo RA1 225x50 or equivalent. Even at VIR, just use 5th at the end of the back straight.

I will be experimenting this weekend at SP with 16x7 front and x8 rear, RA1 225 on the front and 245 rear. However, this is to see about addressing specific handling on a track only car, not entirely stock as they say. And even so, I only started out on the 16s because that's what we had at the time. 15s would be faster, we think. Our actual track tire this year has been Avon 225x50 on 16x7 all around.

I run with FATT, Porsche Club and sometimes the Mercedes club at both tracks. Maybe we've met?

BTW, the 15x6 and 15x7 set was probably not the original set with the car. It was delivered on 15x6 all around. If you can, replace the 15x6 with 15x7.

Just realized your question was quite specific and focused. And I'm not sure any of us answered! Sorry!

Yes, STREET tires on the 15x6f 15x7r in 205 50 would be fine. Possibly a bit short. If it was me and for STREET I'd go with something taller. 205 55 or 60. Also, consider 225 55 all around. Perfect on the 7s and will go on the 6s albiet a squeeze. They'll be slightly taller

I dont think so... I generally run with audi club. I did see your car (not sure if you were driving) at hyperfest when it was leaking oil. Ill be on SC with audi club when NASA runs SP in october so if youll be there Ill come by and say hi.

I was trying to have this car ready for Mercedes club at SC but I discovered the timing belt was off by a tooth. Took the car in for a leakdown test, 98% on cyl 1 & 3 and 93% on 2 and 4. I immediately thanked the gods for sparing me and let the shop re set the timing belt since ive never done one on this car before and I had already dodged one bullet. That ate up a good portion of my parts budget at the time so I had to hold off on getting new shocks.

Actually the car was delivered from the factory with 7" rear wheels. I have one of the 88 SE 924s (option 756) It came with the 6/7" wheels, M030 struts (koni cartirdges have been replaced with bilstein) and a 19mm rear sway. Manual windows, rear wiper delete, manual locks, no center console, car weighs 2618 according to the factory. They even went as far as to delete the passenger side mirror, and make the driver side a manual. I cant wait to get her back tomorrow so I can drive with the new shocks and a good alignment.

I am planning on getting 225 50 RA1s on the 7" wheels once I get a bit of seat time in the car. I figure Id be best learning how to drive the car on street tires thats why Im leaning towards sing the original wheels for now. Basically I just wanted to make sure the tire size owuldnt be too small, but its about he same size as a 225 45 15 and Ive heard a few people use them so I think Ill be ok. Its a second car and most of the miles will be getting to the track so I dont mind a shorter tire as long as I wont be bouncing off the rev limiter on the straights at VIR. Thanks!!!

OK. It's clear now that you know what you are about. Your plan certainly will work. My experience using these cars as you describe - on the track - suggests that you might be more satisfied going directly to 225 width no matter whether street rubber or track rubber. That is not to say 205 won't work. And, 225 can be stuffed onto 6 inch rims.

See you at the track.

BTW, 245x45x16 RA1 fit easily on the back of our car. HOWEVER, the camber is maxed out and then some, and a bit of baseball bat fender shaping been done. So if anyone is inclined for a track car it's demonstrably possible.

I think Im going to go right to the 225s. Tire rack has some bridgestones onm clearance (replacement for PP S03) for $80 each in 225 50 16 so I think Ill use my 16s for now and put the RA1s on the 7s. Thanks again for the help!!!

I have a set of mounted 15X6 Hoosiers on phone dials with 1.5 race weekends on them. They still have plenty of life. They are for sale for $500 for all four. Tires and wheels are in PA but I race at Summit and hope to be there in OCT for NASA. Let me know if you are interested in them, send me a PM if you are.
