Hi all,

pulling out of a car parking space at Sainsbury's the other day and the car snapped its alternator belt. it was a defininate break (rather than a wearing out) of a belt which is no more than a month old.

I had to go to extreme lock to get out of the space, and it appears that this is when the belt snapped - could something catch on the belt from the steering rack? ouch! - luckily had a spare belt in the back and fixed her in about 5mins in the car park

worrying that full lock could do this, assuming that's what happened and not a faulty part.

I can't think of any way the rack (or anything else come to that) could foul the alt belt. Maybe it was just coincidence that it happened right then?

If the alternator is misaligned it can cause wear on the belt to the point where it just snaps. I had this happen to me many times (like 9 in < 1 year) & the only symptom beforehand was that it would start to squeel just before it let go.

Could also be the brand of belt as I haven't lost one since I changed brands (FROM Bosch TO Top Cog believe it or not!).

hmmm, pretty sure last time I looked that they were aligned OK, but maybe it was the brand of belt. It could also have been too tight... Oh well, hopefully it won't happen again soon - will keep a spare in the boot n case!
