|
|
Just quick notes yet; haven't got all the video sliced and diced and processed, but do have some good bits. We had our Waterford Hills season opener this weekend, and the ole PUB Racing ITB 924 was in fine form! We had to thrash pretty good in the weeks beforehand, due to my being away up till the last minute, but got her all lined up and ready to rock... and getting off to a good start this weekend was key, as we're going for the ITB Championship this year!!!
As to the new R6 Hoosiers - well, they certainly don't suck! No complaints, don't feel them as noticeably different from the last set (R3S04's). I do suspect I'm not quite utilizing them fully, but I think I still had a bit more push in the car than I should've.
As to results, 1-1-2! 3 races - 2 class races and a feature. We won both Class races (only ones which count to the championship) and took second in the feature. Exactly the solid start we needed to plan to take the overall win.
First race we qualified a little soft, 0.3s off the ITB pole and about 1s off our usual pace. Knowing we had plenty more speed (it was a cold qual session), we knew we were under no pressure to take over the lead, and basically had 10 laps to get around the leading Capri. But then he bobbled it in turn 3, letting us get a good run down the backstraight and show the nose going into 6. He left the door wide open (when he should've shut it), allowing us to charge through. Better yet, the ITC Civic behind us tucked in tight, depriving him of the line for another corner and dropping him back 2 spots! Got my blocker! Pretty much finished the race like that, 4 cars all together (with another ITC Civic behind the Capri) to the checker - just enough space to know I wasn't holding them up.
Second race, we maintainted the lead, the leading ITC Civic again fell in behind us after passing the Capri on the first lap, and again parading to the checker - this time with a little better gap back to the Civic and Capri.
Final race, we gridded on race lap times - putting us beside the Capri on the inside, but behind a Prod Miata... who flubbed the start pretty bad, costing us the lead. After getting by him, we fought to get a run on the Capri, but failed to capitalize, all the while still being hounded by the Prod Miata. Finally let him by to try and do something with the Capri, but he couldn't work anything either, and even held both of us up at a few spots.
Then finally a rollover about a half lap behind us forced a 1-lap early checker. The 2nd place ITC Civic got into an ITB Rustang while lapping (apparently doing a bit of a sloppy job of it), and wheels touched, launching the Civic into an endo, according to some accounts. Definitely went turtle. But eveyone was OK, so live to race another day (unlike the Civic). It was also, fortunately, one of the slowest corners of the track...
I'll drop a note when all the videos processed and online... _________________ Vaughan Scott

congrats !
Sounds like you have your SCCA regional championship in sight. you have to get your self a really nice rear bar to get the understeer dialed out. We used to also run a harder compound in the rear along with lower pressures to get around it . _________________ 928 gts prototype

Thanks!
It's actually not an SCCA championship, rather the Waterford Hills championship; while we use SCCA rule structure, we are our own sanctioning body. That said, unless you're running in the championship, it's transparent.
I've got plenty of rear bar adjustment; I'm running the 19mm 944 Cup Car bar in the rear, and it was full soft... normally we run it on the middle setting, but we weren't sure what the new t-bars and springs would be like, so wanted to make sure it'd be safe and driveable first, give me a chance to get used to it before turning it all the way up.
I've finally got my data downloaded, and once I sort it all out (all my sessions came down together) it'll be interesting to see how we compare to last year.
Also, if you're interested in perusing the details, we've got full lap charts and details on mylaps.com (a service provided by AMB, the transponder company). The link below should work; we're in Group 5:

19mm is a small bar , you would have to use it full hard to get any where. _________________ 928 gts prototype

Good Morning Vaughan. Congratulations on the excellent start.
LJ and I also did our first (2) races after, what, 2 years of working on the car!
Carolina Motorsports Park. Saturday was beautiful; Sunday rained. Gave us the opportunity to see dry and wet handling
We feel the weekend went well. The handling and brakes were WAY off so we made tremedous strides each day between practice, qualifying, and race. Each race we finished better than our qualifying not counting and dnf cars. And LJ did a great job picking up the 'racecraft'.
The crew chief (me) had installed stock front pads to finish cleaning up the rotors. Turns out whatever brand they really were; they wouldn't even do a session without cooking. Did clean up the rotors though. Installing Carbotech 10 compounds fixed that up.
The rear bar is a Weltmeister 22mm. By the time the weekend was finsihed I have it almost completely soft.
Avons seem to be very comparable with Hoos. And in Sundays rain race using RA1s LJ was only just behind other competitors running Hoos rains. So certainly LJ gets a lot of credit for Sundays performance. He reported having to watch the boost guage in the wet to make sure to not let it 'come on' during the corner. FWIW there was lots of standing water Sunday which made for an exciting race to say the least. Many many spins and extended slides everywhere including the back straight kink! LJ managed to finish with nary a mistep.
The 931 seems to be running without a hitch. Staying cool. We NEED a limited slip. I think running staggered tires sizes may be useful (currently 225 all around). _________________ John

Sounds great John!
The brother of my main rival in ITB started running an ITA 240SX this year; switched from Hoosiers in school to Avons for the first race weekend. Hellish handling problems, at very least it's requiring a substantially different chassis setup. So I'm glad to hear they're working well for you... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Well, on this car at least we don't have anything to compare as we never ran Hoos. The guru who does my alignment set us up. Curious as to the general nature of the changes made going from Hoos to Avons??
BTW, we now have smoke out the exhaust. May yet get to rebuild the whole engine! _________________ John

For those who really can't wait - there's one video already posted on my videos page (go to the website, and click on the Videos page link).
It's huge (over 200Mb), is the entire first Class race, and is the rear-view - showing the ITC Civic chasing me the whole way. But it is one of the most interesting - all the other good bits are just snippets here and there. Which I'll get posted once I've sliced and diced them all up. This was posted as a favor to the Civic driver. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Update - uploaded some more videos... only missing a few of the rear video now. Res is higher than before IMO (do give some feedback), and now the front camera video shorter clips are uploaded, but the file sizes still are larger... think the smallest is around 23Mb...
