GM Top Engine cleaner, soak and scrub with a tooth brush. Repeat until the cows come home.

I used an aussie product called INOX and a scourer. The scourer did most of the work tho - tops of the pistons took all day.

But hang on.. that doesnt just look like crud on the top of your pistons... it looks nasty! Is that the rsult of severe detonation?

It looks the same as the 3 engine blocks I've got taken apart in my garage at the moment. Its just baked on carbon debris.

Oh ok I had very similar buildups. In the picture it looks a little concave but obviously not.

Crunchie (Dave) recommends a lubricated knife sharpening block rubbed gently on the deck to get it back to new condition.

razor blade, or a wire wheel but make sure you put piston to TDC before you do the cleaning.

I have seen pistons with that, but the couple of times I had my 924s head off I had no deposits on it.

Leave it on! It just gives you higher compression. Just kidding.

put your motor back together as is the fill your tank with gas then add 1 can of BG44K frun the tank to half fill back up and run down. i used it in my jetta after the 1st 1/4 of a tank i could feel a big difference. it the same stuff thats in the shevron gas but 30x stronger. it will clean your system and same company make this stuff you put in you oil called MOA super slick shit, i've seen a motor that has lost almost all of it oil and drive 25 highway miles to my friends shop.

http://www.google.com/search?q=bg44k&revid=1659407725&sa=X&oi=revisions_inline&ct=revision&cd=1

No matter how good a gas-tank-additive engine cleaner is, its never gonna get between the head, gasket and block and clean the mating surfaces. The head and block need to be clean for the gasket to make a seal. Putting the engine back together without cleaning the deck is a mistake.
