I thought I heard on the news about an 8.0 quake in NZ today. Haven't seen or heard anything else about it. Anyone know?

Hi, thanks for the concern.

No it was actually in Tonga (or about 2000k's away from us), but had potential to create a tidal wave that could have hit New Zealand. Luckily it didn't happen, as we were all fast asleep and wouldn't have seen it coming!!

I've got some freinds in Tonga at the moment, so I'm a bit worried, but reports so far indicate no major damage.
