Guys, what just happened?!!?

I was about 20 minutes into my 45minute drive home just now....and the battery light switched on. (i was having battery issues - see my earlier topic in this forum)

As this happeend, the temp needle went round to full max. I thought it a bit odd as it went straight up all the way immediately and i just put it down to some electrical fault.

I carried on until i got home but as i pulled up at my house....there was a series of deep "thuds" from the engine bay. I switched the car off and opened the bonnet to see that each "thud" was a big flush of water in the coolant expansion tank!! it was like it was trying to explode!?

It repeated every 30 seconds or so....for about 10 minutes...getting quieter as the engine cooled..... To be honest it did smell as though the engine was overheating too. Is it broken?

All this just as i am about to move house tomorrow!!?!?

I hope someone can tell me whats happened and what to do....as i don't think i can drive it to work tomorrow.

oh dear.

Did you notice that your alternator/water pump belt is no longer attached to the front of the engine?

Find a new one, and replace the worn-out alternator mounting bushings while you're at it. This will help hold belt tension and prevent misalignment of the pulleys... which causes the belt to fling off...

Yeah. almost 100% chance of belt being gone. Either bushings are bad and it popped off . . . or I think most likely it was just old and it broke. Your temp will go way up real fast when your water pump stops working. That's why your gauge went all the way up like that. Just get a new belt and try running the car. Hopefully it wasn't overheated long enough to do any major damage.
