Do you mean direct injection?

Direct injection squirts the fuel directly (hence the name) into the cylinder (i.e. after the inlet valve) as opposed to into the inlet manifold like normal (i.e. before the inlet valve).

The biggest difference is that direct injection needs to overcome the compression of the cylinder as opposed to the vacuum of the inlet manifold.

Most (all?) diesels are direct injection, very few petrol (gas) engines are (I can only think of one, the Mitsubishi GDi).

What's on your mind, Keaton?

Really?

Seems to me that it's a complicated method of replacing something that works fine already.

It's much more efficient - step up in power and economy. Same complaints could be said of going from carbs to fuel injection.

True. When BMW brought out the 2002 Tii, with its Kugelfischer mechanical injection (similar to the Bosch CIS), pundits thought they were mad for not sticking to tried-and-tested Weber DCOEs.
