Can anyone help me isolate a metalic clonking noise on overrun,have tried drive shafts,bearings etc but cannot find source,anyone any ideas before I pull the tranny.

Lots of possibilitys, axles, loose wheel nuts, mounts, trans itself, clutch......Good luck. Oh, by the way...I have all those parts!!!

Yes, plenty of possibilities... if it's a single "thunk", I'd question trans or engine mounts... might as well replace with new, they're not horribly expensive...

if all measures to identify source of noise fail,a last option would be to put the car on jack stands and bring the wheels up to speed (1 person in the car and 1 squating at the rear to listen ) since there will be no load on the half shafts ,or trans you may not be able to reproduce the noise. if your talking about a clunk when you pull away from a dead stop,that is to be expected on older overdrives,your supposed to engage them at speed and disengage them when you are no longer at sustained speed ( stop and go driving )
